I have forever been a supporter of our local arts; personally as well as professionally with my business Jungle Red Salon Spa and Gallery. Art, quite simply, is communication. It is a different medium to express ideas and to share information. From the carpet pattern we have in our house to the advertisements on television, it can be found all around us. In the modern era, we find ourselves so saturated with ideas through various art forms that we tune out much of what we see, putting us at risk of missing something wonderful that can impact our lives on a basic, soulful, level.
Other forms of expression, such as language, can be presented with obstacles that can make the message difficult or impossible to interpret. But when we consider the image, movement, or music, our ideas can overcome the barriers of language and culture to be received, understood and appreciated. Art allows us to communicate complex emotional concepts in a straightforward and meaningful way.
We the people can choose to create our own art and share our own vision with the world. There are whole new worlds to explore if we simply choose to reach beyond surface level, and delve deeper into our humanity to truly connect and share the ideas that are soulful. Join me in supporting our local arts in all forms; it is timelessly trending.

Fall is here, and we are so ready for all the makeup trends that come with it. This season, full coverage foundation is back! With the heat of summer come and gone, a full face of makeup will stay on all day long. To add dimension to your face, try faux freckles. They provide a cute, endearing appeal which can help you turn back the clock. Anyone can achieve realistic looking freckles and they are easy to apply! Try using a brown eyebrow pencil to scatter the freckles in the desired areas. Like always, a glowy highlight on the high points of your face will bring life to your look. A beaming highlight will make you look refreshed and awake, even when you don’t feel like it! Berries and mauves are some of the most classic fall colors which can be worn as a bold, matte lipstick. Even though you may not be ready for the cold, when you put them all together, these beauty trends will put you in the spirit and make you ready for autumn!
Here at Jungle Red Salon, we specialize in Brazilian Blowouts for all hair types. This blog post will cover common questions you might have regarding this smoothing treatment.
Q: What is a Brazilian Blowout?
A: A Brazilian blowout is the only smoothing treatment that can be customized to keep curl and lose frizz, or to achieve a sleek, straight result. Known for significantly reducing drying and styling time up to 12 weeks, a major benefit of this treatment is that it is finished at the salon with no down time. This means you can leave the salon and immediately wash your hair, work out or style it!
Q: What types of hair could benefit from a Brazilian Blowout?
A: Any type of hair that suffers from frizz, tangles, or is difficult to tame.
Q. Will my hair lose volume if I receive the Brazilian Blowout?
A: No, your hair will not lose volume as a result of receiving the Brazilian Blowout. Your hair will maintain its natural volume and you will still receive great bend and memory when blow-drying or using a curling iron.
Q. Can you color your hair the same day you receive a Brazilian Blowout?
A: Yes, however, you must color your hair prior to having the Brazilian Blowout smoothing treatment. If you get a Brazilian Blowout and wish to get a color service at a later date, you will need to wait 2 weeks.
Q: How long does a Brazilian Blowout last?
A: It typically lasts around 3 months.
Q: What is something about a Brazilian Blowout that most people don't know?
A: While most people think that the Brazilian Blowout will damage hair, it will actually improve the health of the hair by adding protein back into the hair which rebuilds bonds that have been damaged from environmental or chemical stressors. This seals the cuticle for enhanced color, reduced frizz and radiant shine.
Extensions have become more and more mainstream, and with so many different kinds it can be daunting to choose what's right for your hair, your lifestyle, and your budget. We are here to help de-mystify the process of getting the mermaid locks you dream of!
The most important question is, “what type of extensions are right for me?” When choosing extensions it is important to consider which option would be best for your particular hair type. Not all types of extensions create the same effect. Talking to your stylist about your desired look and length will help give you a better idea of which extension option is perfect for you.
Tape-ins
Tape-in extensions are great for those looking for more length and/or fullness, but not necessarily more volume at the scalp, as these extensions lay fairly flat against the head. They can be highly customized in the placement and amount of hair used, to give the perfect amount of volume and length. They are applied by sandwiching a small section of your own hair between two sections of the extension hair, which are each attached to an adhesive strip. It generally takes about an hour to an hour and a half to install a full head. The adhesive lasts for 6 to 8 weeks depending on the quality, and of course, your personal maintenance. If your stylist uses a very high quality of hair, it is possible to re-install the extensions with new adhesive and wear them an additional 1-2 times before needing to purchase new hair. For removal, the adhesive needs to be “dissolved” with a professional product. At Jungle Red, we opt for the most gentle option which is an oil-based product so that the integrity of your hair is maintained.
Sew-ins
If you’re looking for volume volume volume, sew-in hair extensions are for you. They do not lie as flat to the head as tape-ins do, which adds extra bulk at the scalp along with the length. This type of hair comes in a very long track, that is cut into sections to fit your head and customize the placement. Sew-ins are applied by braiding very small sections of your own hair tight onto the scalp (aka cornrows), and then sewing the extension hair to the braid with a special needle and thread. While they do take longer to install, about two hours, sew-in extensions are the most secure. Similar to tape-ins, the lasting time of sew-in extensions depends on the quality of hair and personal at-home care. The application will last 8-12 weeks, and depending on the quality of the hair used it is possible to re-install the extensions and wear them an additional time before needing to purchase new hair.
Clip-ins
Although clip-ins require the most self-service and maintenance, they are a perfect option if you are looking for something less permanent that you can play with when the mood strikes. You can add just a few pieces for fullness around the face, or clip in a full head for a day of longer fuller hair. Because clip-ins have become so incredibly popular, there is a wide range in quality of hair and product in general. Make sure that you know what you want out of longevity and styling options, and ask the right questions before making a purchase. Remember that you truly do get what you pay for when it comes to quality of extension hair! Higher quality hair will last longer and have a more natural texture without getting tangled.
Fusion/Bond
Another form of hair extension services used by many salons is fusion bonding. There are many reasons why we do not recommend this service. First, fusion bonding is the most damaging to the hair. Sections of hair are applied using a protein bond, which is much too heavy of a substance and can cause uncomfortable tension at the scalp, and damage the hair follicle with long-term wear. The extension hair is literally “bonded” to your own hair. This means that when they need to be removed for tightening or to install new hair, that bond has to be broken which will weaken your own hair and can lead to breakage. Second, the hair is less secure than the other options and is more easily ripped out (which is not only damaging to the hair, but also extremely painful!!) Lastly, fusion bonding services are quite pricey and take the most time to install at around 3-4 hours.
At Jungle Red, we carry Remy hair extensions, which are 100% real, Indian hair. It is of the highest quality, collected in a controlled environment and carefully inspected to ensure that each cuticle is intact so that the strands all grow in the same direction. It is considered “virgin hair” meaning it does not undergo any chemical processing. Remy hair can be washed, styled and colored to accommodate your wishes, but there are a few important rules to follow. Since extensions are not exposed to your scalp’s natural oil secretion, it is recommended that you apply oils (professional-grade only to avoid build-up!) to the extensions in order to maintain consistent hydration. Coloring the hair is possible, but more tricky, and the best bet is leaving this to the pros to protect your investment. If you are wanting to go darker, the extensions can be colored as would normal hair. Going lighter is a bit more of a challenge, because it is more damaging to remove pigment from hair. It is suggested that you begin with a lighter shade, and darker shades and low-lights can always be added! When it comes to styling, it is important to treat Remy hair with as much care as you would your own hair. Since Remy is actual human hair, it becomes weaker every time heat is applied to it. Using a heat protectant when heat styling (blow drying, curling, flat ironing) is always recommended in order to maintain the highest quality and longest wear time as possible.
So, you’ve decided to take the plunge! Should you shop on your own, or head to a licensed salon to get you going? Since hair extensions make quite a significant beauty transformation when done properly, having an experienced professional stylist take care of the process ensures a more natural look. Your stylist can help in selecting the proper installation method, provide a customized color to ensure a seamless result, and provide home-care and styling tips to get the most out of your investment. Additionally, they can guarantee the result and longevity of the hair. Now the only question is, “How do I find the right stylist?” We suggest checking out the salon’s website and social media profiles. Most places have photos of their stylists’ work that provide a great representation of their styles and techniques. You may even be able to find reviews past clients gave the salon and stylists. Set up a consultation before committing. Consultations should always be complimentary, and it is a good time to gauge whether you have found the right fit for all of your needs.
At Jungle Red Salon, we would love to be a part of your hair transformation. Our stylists have many years of experience with customizing extensions to every hair type, color, and budget. Give us a call and set up a no-pressure consultation!
Giving season is upon us again! Lights are up, trees are in, and decorations are out. How ever you spend this time of the year, it most likely includes special traditions. Traditions are important; they give us something to look forward to, bring us comfort, and connect us back to our roots. But, it’s inevitable that there are also those traditions that make us feel overwhelmed or stressed. This holiday season, we challenge you to break those. It’s okay to ask for help in the kitchen, it’s okay to tell friends you’d rather not exchange gifts, and it’s okay to not send a personalized card to everyone you know. It’s important to remember the holiday season is also a time to take a break from our daily realities. Make sure you’re living in the moment and enjoying this time through all of the senses: the smells, tastes, special people filling your heart, and the sights of beautiful colors. If your traditions are already balanced and in order, there are other great ways to shake things up this year. It’s a perfect opportunity to use our personal new obsession, the Pantone color of the year, Marsala. Don’t get me wrong, we love the color red- the salon is named Jungle RED, after all! However, we are also all about making a statement. Rather than being in the same color as everyone else, why not be on trend and represent tradition in a unique way? Marsala is a pinker, browner version of red and looks great on all skin tones. Dresses and blouses, nail polish, boots, or lipstick are all beautiful ways to incorporate the color “marsala.”. There’s just one more month to celebrate this color with Pantone before the next color is revealed, so I encourage everyone to try it. It’s not hard to find, and it’s easy to make it work. So, try something new this month—an event, an exchange, or a color! It may make for an even better experience for next year!!
Hair Color Trends
It seems this year has been especially exciting for experimentation with hair color, and we couldn’t be more on board! In 2013, the ómbre trend quickly gained momentum as people all across the country realized it was here to stay. After all, it is practical for those of us on the go who don’t have time for constant highlight touch ups. More recently, those shaded roots and lighter ends have gone from simple variations of blonde and brunette to more unnatural tones like Kylie Jenner’s bright teal ends, Sienna Miller’s cotton-candy pink and copper ómbre, and Nicole Richie’s various tones of lavender, hot pink and blue.
It’s clear we’ve come a long way from the London ‘80’s punk rock scene where neon green Mohawks, brilliant pink spikes, and bright yellow shags last roamed the streets. Today, women are sporting this colorful style in a more sophisticated and chic way by pairing it with soft coiffed curls, sleek high buns, or intentionally tousled beach waves. And rather than pairing bold hair with bold makeup, we are seeing a more natural touch on the face with an everyday sort of style.
So we say, bring on the whole rainbow spectrum! Whatever level of intensity and coverage you’re comfortable with, now is the time to have fun with color! If you’re not fully ready to commit, start with more subtle hues that blend into your current color. For example, if you’re blonde now, add ómbre style pieces of soft lavender or pastel pink that compliment the current hue of your hair. Or, add one or a few peek-a-boo style pieces that are mostly hidden and peek out as your hair moves. There are so many options! A small, bright pink section, an all over watercolor blue, ora deep-dark-purply-brunette-shaded-into-vibrant-violet ómbre (like Jungle Red’s own hairstylist Leah!) are all great ways to try something new. Seize the opportunity to be slightly (or very) daring and find the version of this trend that is totally YOU!
Top 3 skin care myths and misconceptions:
Our Skincare expert, Jodi explains the facts behind the fiction.
1) Cleansing your face with bar soap or body cleanser is ok. Fact or Fiction? FICTION
"The ingredients used in bar soap to solidify it are incredibly harsh! Body soaps are usually made with strong sulfates that strip your skin of it's natural moisture. Taking away your skin's own oils throws off the balance and your face will become subject to acne, dryness and uneven tone due to an imbalanced PH level at the skin's surface."
Think: that tight, squeaky clean feeling is really your face crying out for hydration and getting stripped of it's own healthy nutrients
2) Oily skin doesn't need a moisturizer. Fact or Fiction? FICTION
"Oily or combination skin that doesn't receive a topical moisturizer will think it's dehydrated and in turn, produce MORE oil. It's very important to have the right moisturizer for your skin type. Shiny complexions usually require an oil-free moisturizer with sebum-balancing ingredients."
3) Sunscreen isn't needed for short exposure times. Fact or Fiction? FICTION
"UVA and UVB rays are always present, even during cloudy days. They penetrate skin in minutes and cause potentially cancer-causing damage along with accelerated aging. Facial skin is much thinner than body skin and needs a protection level of at least 15-30 SPF. 90% of skin's aging is caused by cumulative, shorter periods of time outdoors when no protection is worn rather than a few of those long days on the beach yielding a sunburn. Wear sunscreen on your face, everyday!"
