As these micro-spheres are absorbed by the skin, the capsules are digested by the enzymes in the skin, releasing their contents in a gradual and programmed manner.

SEPTEMBER 2013

We are thrilled to announce Jungle Red’s featured artist for September, Megan Doman! Megan will display her work throughout the month at Jungle Red Salon Spa Gallery. Stop in on Wednesday September 4, from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m., during Rhythm & Red to meet the artist. You can view her artwork, listen to music LIVE from jazz musician, José James and enjoy complimentary wine.

MEET THE ARTIST: MEGAN DOMAN

Image

Granddaughter to an industrial designer, Minnesota native Megan Doman, inherited his artistic talent. Don Doman was an educated, creative, and diligent designer. At the height of his career he was a product designer for Raymond Loewy Associates in Chicago, design director for the Parker Pen company and eventually owning his own industrial design firm; Don Doman Associates Inc.

From an early age, Megan Doman began following in her Grandfather’s footsteps. After her instructors noted her level of detailed drawings compared to her pre-school peers, Megan’s parents encouraged her interests. During middle school and high school she took every available art course, including painting, drawing, photography, pottery, fashion, and CAD. Formal training came from courses at the Minneapolis Institute of Art, and her Bachelor’s of Fine Art degree in interior design from the College of Design, Iowa State University (ISU). While attending ISU, Megan had the privilege of studying abroad in Rome, Italy. There her talent flourished under the influences of her European professors, the culture, and history.

Today, Megan is happily creating custom pieces from her home studio in hopes not only fill her Grandfather’s shoes, but to out-grow them.

MEET THE MUSICIAN: JOSE JAMES

Image

José James was born in Ancón, Canal Zone, Panamá. He is a singer-songwriter and producer, has had his music featured in movies and Television shows like Exiled, Jessica Simpson’s The Price Of, Daddy’s Girl, Human Giant, Things To Try Before You Die and Caribbean Carnival to name a few. He’s a three-time Minnesota Hall of Fame inductee as a member of Willie & The Bees, Shangoya, Ipso Facto and was voted Best Brass/Reed Artist at the Minnesota Music Awards in 1994.

José moved to the United States in 1975. While attending the University of Minnesota, he performed with the Jazz Ensemble directed by Dr. Frank Bencriscutto touring with Clark Terry, ending with a performance at Carnegie Hall in New York City. During this time he also played and learned from Eddie Daniels, Bob Brookmeyer and Art Pepper. In 1978 he joined Willie and the Bees, an R&B institution in the Twin Cities led by Willie Murphy. They recorded “Out of the Woods”, one of the first digital albums for Sound 80 Records with José writing “Let Me Be Your Friend” and co-writing “Stone Broke” with Murphy.

In 1987 José joined the rock reggae group Ipso Facto in Minneapolis. After touring for two years, they entered the 1989 Yamaha Soundcheck Band competition, winning the Best Band award in the United States. He had the opportunity to represent the U.S. at Band Explosion ‘89 in Tokyo, Japan. They competed against 22 bands from 23 countries around the world, winning the first place platinum prize and subsequently signing a recording contract with Sony/Epic Records. Ipso Facto went on to record four CDs, touring with UB40, Tracy Chapman, Third World, Ziggy Marley and the Melody Makers, Shabba Ranks, The Kinks, The Clash, Alexander O’Neal, Richard Marx and many more!

In 1992 José formed bands under his own name, opening shows for Jimmy Walker, Nipsey Russell, George Wallace, and Larry Miller; and performing with Paul Williams, Doc Severinsen, Bonnie Raitt, Rubén Blades and Prince. Then in 1998, he joined Lorie Line & her Pop Chamber Orchestra playing World Percussion, touring the United States until 2004. During that time he released Jungle To Jungle, an electro/acoustic dance album, PhD Sixx P’s, a football rap CD, and With Faith/Con Fé, a CD of Latin Pop music.

José is currently touring the United States, Europe & Africa with The Bernard Allison Group. In addition, he continues to perform with other artists and with his own group promoting his latest CD release "Happy Christmas" for audiences around the world.

Day of Donating

Last week we mentioned a few ways our readers could help local, Twin Cities charities, and this week we'd like to add two more causes that are near and dear to our hearts. On Friday, August 30 we will be celebrating an entire day of donating and we'd love for our awesome readers to join us!

During the day Friday, Jungle Red is hosting the Minnesota leg of the BarkAid 50 States Tour. This charitable event features stylist, Patrick Lomantini performing 50 haircuts, in 50 states, in 50 days, with all proceeds going to local animal shelters. The shelter benefiting from cuts performed at Jungle Red is the Midwest Animal Rescue & Services, a nationally recognized non-profit organization. If you'd like to help homeless animals in our community, please call our front desk at (612) 870-0653 to schedule your haircut with Patrick on August 30.

Image

Want to show off your fresh, new haircut while continuing to give? Join us at the Cabooze after 7:30 p.m. on August 30, for FOODSTOCK MN 2013. FOODSTOCK MN is an annual concert that features some of the state's most popular artists and benefits Minnesota food shelves. As an official sponsor, the Jungle Red team will be there giving away prizes and rockin' out!  We'd love to see, so if you're over 18 stop by the Cabooze with a canned food item and be prepared to have a great night! Tickets are only $10 and can be purchased online: http://foodstockusa.com/

Philanthropy in the Jungle

Staying on top of the latest hair, skin and beauty trends is what we do best, and one trend that never goes out of style is philanthropy! Here at Jungle Red we genuinely believe in giving back. We strive to be good neighbors and support the Twin Cities community we are so proud to be a part of.

One unique way we support the community is through our art gallery. Each month we give a different, local artist an opportunity to showcase their work in our gallery. To help promote the featured artist we host a reception called Rhythm & Red. This event, which takes place on the first Wednesday of each month, is a great opportunity for the artist to mingle with the public and everyone to enjoy live music, wine and snacks. To learn more about Rhythm and Red, visit: http://jungleredsalon.com/events

Another way we give back is through our Annual "Treasure for Teens” event.  “Treasures for Teens” is truly a night to remember! The evening features silent auctions, giveaways and fun performances. Proceeds from the event support Avenues For Homeless Youth, a transitional housing program for teens that find themselves with nowhere to go. To learn more about Avenues visit: http://www.avenuesforyouth.org/

We are currently raising funds in cooperation with the non-profit organization, Carrie’s Fund, to send our scholarship winner, Deanne to the Aveda Institute. We set out to raise $10,000 and are only $800 away from reaching our goal! Please stop in or give us a call (612-870-0653) if you’d like to help!

24th Annual Polo Classic

The Jungle Red team is very excited to be participating in this year’s Polo Classic supporting the University of Minnesota Leatherdale Equine Center! We’ll be judging the ever-popular hat parade during the event, which is awesome since we consider ourselves style experts…but, we don’t know much about the actual sport, so we did some research. Did you know that the first polo matches were played in Persia around 500 B.C.? That makes polo the oldest team sport in history! Around the 1860’s polo made it’s way to England and on to the United States from there. Polo is still a very popular around the world and has many passionate fans.

Dress is a large part of the fun of polo matches. It’s a chance for spectators to get dressed up and show off their personal style. Men typically wear nice pants and a polo shirt with an optional sports coat. Women tend to have more acceptable options, but sundresses and maxi-style dresses are the most popular. Jewelry, handbags and of course, hats are used to complete the outfits (think Julia Roberts in the polo scene of “Pretty Woman”). Women typically wear flats or wedges, but never heels because they would get stuck in the field during the traditional divot stomp at halftime.

Polo matches are fun events for all ages. They’re a great reason to get together with friends and family, dress up and enjoy the outdoors. If you’re interested in attending the event with us, stop into the Jungle to purchase tickets or visit www.thepoloclassic.com to learn more.

We’ll see you, and your fabulous hat there!

Food for Healthy Summer Skin

You know the old adage, “You are what you eat”? Well, it seems to be true and your skin reflects it! Many of us claim that chocolate makes us break-out or that potato chips make our skin oily, but there are plenty of foods that can help your skin become healthier. Here are a few foods that will help you perfect a healthy, summer glow.

-       Strawberries, Pomegranate, Kiwi, & Blueberries

  • These fruits are filled with anti-oxidants and vitamin C, that help improve the collagen in your skin.

-       Salmon

  • This fish is known for its’ fatty acids, specifically the kind that protect the cell membranes of your skin.

-       Sweet Potatoes

  • Besides the amazing amounts of vitamin C, potassium and calcium, sweet potatoes have a high level of vitamin A and beta-carotene. These elements are crucial for healthy skin and help prevent aging.

-       Green Tea

  • Drink up! This beverage’s anti-oxidants help fight the built up wastes in our skin. By riding your skin of waste you can prevent acne.
  • To mix things up, you can put chilled, damp tea bags over your eyes. The tea bags act as an astringent, which reduces puffiness.
  • Studies have also shown that green tea may prevent the risk of skin cancer by protecting it from UV rays.

Try incorporating these skin-healthy foods into your diet this summer and your skin will surely thank you!

Meet this month’s Rhythm & Red Artists!

JULY 2013

This month we are very excited to have not one, but five artists featured for this month's Rhythm & Red!  Each artist is a talented member of our salon family and their work will be on display throughout the month at Jungle Red Salon Spa Gallery.  Stop in on Wednesday, July 10 from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. to meet the artists, listen to LIVE music by DJ Weizy and enjoy complimentary wine and snacks!

Brooke Nieland (Marketing Assistant) is a native of St. Cloud, MN. Brooke’s realization for her true passion of design sits near and dear to her heart. As a way to enhance her spiritual connection to her late father, Brooke wanted to gain knowledge in his former field of carpentry and construction. By educating herself in these areas, Brooke was able to establish her true talents within drawing and design aspects. Brooke attended Alexandria Technical and Community College where she earned her AAS degree in Communication Art & Design. She continued her education by completing her certification in Advanced Multimedia and Web Design. Currently, Brooke is enrolled at University of MN to complete her Bachelor’s Degree in Graphic Design. She also works at a local branding agency in NE Minneapolis, while still making time to teach painting classes with Wine and Canvas throughout the Twin Cities area. Brooke remains connected to carpentry as a hobby to continue her father’s passion.

Chris Lindahl (Stylist) is joining us as a featured artist this month with many creative talents. With over 20 years of art experience, Chris appreciates expressing his creative side across multiple mediums. Chris enjoys creating oil painting, dabbles in canvas painting from time to time and insists that he “doesn’t take anything seriously.” In addition, Chris’ background and career as a hair stylist has allowed him to demonstrate his artist skills through hair and personal care. His passion for art, styling and customer satisfaction truly reveals his artistic capacity. Outside of working at Jungle Red and painting, Chris enjoys playing golf and creating music.

Katie Sellner (Graphic Designer) is a graduate from the former College of Visual Arts in St. Paul, MN. She earned her BFA in 2012 and has been working hard ever since. Katie illustrates work that portrays a dry comical stance on the deeper psychological mechanisms. Her work is narrative, comic-like and often inspired by the people she is surrounded by. Her work includes one-liners that that allow the viewer to glimpse into the portrayed character’s psyche.

Jaimie Juettner (Stylist) is a familiar face at Jungle Red as she is a current stylist, cosmetologist and continuing education coordinator on our team. Jaimie has a strong passion for art and creativity through both professional measures and painting. Jaimie attended Westmore Academy of Cosmetic Arts to further her knowledge in the field. Her appetite for art is primarily a hobby, in which she gains her inspiration from personal life experiences and human emotion. Outside of the salon and painting, Jaimie enjoys spending time with her family and staying active through marathons and ice skating

Madison Elyse Rubenstein (Friend of Salon) is a multi-disciplinary artist with a focus in painting, drawing, and printmaking. She was born in Los Angeles and grew up in Bloomington, MN. Her plan is to graduate with a degree in Drawing & Painting from the Minneapolis College of Art and Design in the fall of 2013. Madison Elyse works in a variety of media and focuses on the ephemeral qualities of communication. She is interested in visceral and emotional experiences that are more appropriately described through images rather than language. Madison Elyse is also the Artistic Director of The Friction Collective, a multi-disciplinary queer arts collective based in Minneapolis. Organic Spray Tan Benefits

Ladies and gentlemen, it's wedding season and love is in the air! Whether you’re walking down the aisle yourself or attending as a guest, you’ll want to look your best for these special events. One way to ensure you look and feel great in your summer formal wear is to have glowing, golden skin. As you may know, UV tanning is not very safe, nor is it very effective; that’s why more and more people are turning to spray tanning to achieve that highly sought-after glow. Though traditional spray tans offer some pros, like evening skin tone and blending tan lines, there are also many cons to consider, including:

  • DHA is a chemical commonly found in spray tanning solution, which can cause damage to cells, add to the risk of birth defects with pregnant women, and could possibly lead to cancer
  • There is alcohol and parabens found in most spray tanning solutions, which can dry out skin and cause irritation
  • The harsh fumes and odors in spray tan could be dangerous to inhale on a regular basis
  • The color can be too “orange” or artificial, which is typical because there is only one standard shade in most solutions

If all of this sounds a bit scary, don’t worry, we have a safer way to keep you golden for wedding season and year-round: organic spray tan! Organic spray tanning solutions, like the kind we use at Jungle Red, offer the same if not better results than traditional spray tans, but without the harmful chemicals.

Here are some of the benefits of organic spray tans:

  • The DHA in organic solution is derived from plants and sugar cane, not chemically created
  • Organic solutions are paraben and alcohol free
  • There aren’t harsh odors
  • Colors are customized and picked based on your skin tone to avoid looking fake
  • And best of all, the price is comparable to that of traditional spray tans

Here in the Jungle we are proud to offer a completely customizable spray tan experience using only Sjolie Tanning Products, which are 100 percent organic, vegan and PETA approved. Call us at  612-870-0653 to see the beautiful benefits yourself!

Waxing Tips for Bikini Season

Today is the first offical day of summer, and you know what that means ladies- bikini season! Whether you’re an avid waxer or a first timer, a body wax can be a very intimate and at times intimidating experience, but don’t fret, we’re here to make your waxing experience as pleasant as possible.

When you decide you’re ready to plunge into the world of waxing, here are some things to keep in mind:

-Exfoliate the area the night before your wax to remove any dead skin or lotion that may prevent the wax from sticking.

-You may want to take an over the counter painkiller 20 minutes before your appointment to take the edge off of the sting.

-Make sure you let the hair you are going to get waxed grow at least one quater inch- this will allow for the wax to grab the hair most effectively.

Let us make your waxing experience a great one! Call 612-870-0653 or stop into the Jungle to set your appointment.
