DevaCurl
After launching over a decade ago at the trendy Devachan salon in New York City, DevaCurl quickly became the most popular curl care products among curly girls seeking to free their inner curl naturally. With the introduction of DevaCurl No-Poo®, the Original Non-Lathering Conditioning Cleanser came the beginning of a CURLvolution! DevaCurl was one of the first hair care brands to replace harsh, damaging detergents with gentle, hydrating ingredients and botanical extracts. Today, DevaCurl offers a complete line of sulfate-, silicone- and paraben-free cleansers, conditioners and styling products that deliver healthy, naturally gorgeous, frizz free curls.

The USDA and Soil Association certified organic range proves that it's possible to create completely clean, food-based products that also deliver professional quality results. His revolutionary products include hair care, hair styling, aromatic fragrances, lip care and supplements and advanced skin care. Intelligent Nutrients products are always free from sulfates, petrochemicals, plastics, phthalates, parabens, silicone and other nasty chemicals.
DS Laboratories
DS Laboratories products feature the most advanced technology for the transportation of substances: essentially substances and active ingredients are delivered in a way which follows prior programming for a specific function. DS Laboratories organic micro-spheres are designed in such a way that we are able to determine their degree of absorption, allowing the active ingredients to penetrate the skin to the desired depth. As these micro-spheres are absorbed by the skin, the capsules are digested by the enzymes in the skin, releasing their contents in a gradual and programmed manner.

Keep Your Hair Healthy This Winter!

As we move from fall to winter here in Minneapolis, Jungle Red wants you to have the best looking and most healthy hair possible! With the cold and dry weather comes dry hair, so you must be especially cognizant of the damage you’re doing to your hair with heat styling. Here at Jungle Red we have a product for every hair type to protect your hair and ensure a great style.

To start, here is an example of frizzy, dry hair transformed into silky smooth curls with the help of stylist Jaimie and several of the products we carry at the salon.

What a big difference, huh? Let Jungle Red help you achieve this same result!
To help, we’ll go over six different hair products and our favorite styling tool that is available at Jungle Red!

Jungle Red’s Favorite Heat Protectant Products

Kevin.Murphy Hair.Resort.Spray: This is a texturizing spray (non-aerosol) that contains a heat protectant. Simply spray on before flat iron or curl and it will give you extra hold as well as protection from damage that can occur when using a thermal tool. It protects up to 428 degrees and can be used on wet or dry hair. All hair types can benefit from Hair.Resort, and we also like to use it for round brushing as well because it gives your hair a little slip so that it won’t get tangled on your brush.

Kevin.Murphy Anti.Gravity.Spray: This is a volumizing and bodifying spray (non-aerosol) that contains thermal protection. It builds volume and adds structure to each hair strand to create more lift and movement to the hair. Anti.Gravity is recommended for finer hair textures. It protects up to 428 degrees and is suitable for wet or damp hair. This spray gives great hold and reinforces shine.  A tip for people coming into the salon for bridal styles or updos, or even planning to style their own hair for a special event,  is to use this product the night before -- It will give the hair more texture, grip and give your updo/style longevity!

Kevin.Murphy Straight.Defence: This is a weightless straightening balm that also protects up to 428 degrees. You simply apply the balm onto damp hair and work through evenly.  Then blow-dry straight with a hair brush. This is a great product because it has heat protectant but will also keep your hair relaxed and straight. It’s heavier than a spray so it is recommended mainly for thick or coarse textured hair.

Kevin.Murphy Damage.Manager: Once again this product will protect your hair from any heat styling up to 428 degrees! It is a weightless spray, meant for all hair types. To use, spray all over before blow-drying to protect from the heat of your dryer.  When styling, spray each section before using a curling iron or flat iron. It is a Jungle Red favorite heat protectant. Unlike the other Kevin.Murphy products listed above, Damage.Manager’s only job is to protect your hair from heat. So if you don’t need any other benefits, this is your go to heat protectant.

Simply Organic Sun Shine: This product is a heat activated shine complex.  It protects against heat while adding shine. This product is conditioning and is suitable for wet or dry hair. This product is great for fine, dull hair, or hair that needs a little nourishment as well as protection.

Moroccan Oil Treatment: This is a leave-in argan oil treatment. Moroccan Oil is great for dry, damaged, or processed hair, but suitable for all hair types to enhance manageability and shine. Moroccan Oil should be used on wet or damp hair.  This product conditions the hair and protects from your blow-dryer, while decreasing blow-dry time.

In addition to using proper styling and protective products, we also recommend a professional quality thermal tool for optimal results. Featured today are the Babyliss Pro, Professional Ceramic curling irons and flat irons. Using professional thermal irons provides a more even and stable thermal conductor that will help you achieve a better result.  Professional irons are also constructed with thermal plates that are non-porous for a smoother grip that won’t catch your hair.  We also feature Cricket round brushes for blow-drying body and volume into the hair.  Professional round brushes contain heat-resistant bristles that won’t break down, and don’t pull or break the hair.  They are also are made up of tourmaline or another material that conducts heat to really smooth and create bend in the hair.  Using the proper size thermal tool is very important in achieving the result you desire, whether you are using a flat iron, curling iron, or round brush.  Round brushes and curling irons come in a variety of sizes that produce different curls and movement in the hair.

We would be happy to assist you in choosing the optimal tool and product for your hair type and style!  Be sure to come in to Jungle Red soon to prepare for winter and take your hair’s health to the next level!

Rhythm & Red and the Opening Reception of August Art Exhibit

Please join us Wednesday, August 1st from 6 to 8 pm for our Rhythm & Red event. We invite you and your friends to move to the rhythm of our LIVE local music by Leah T., while provoking your pallet with complimentary wine, and feasting your eyes upon the amazing artwork of local artists Jonathon Reese and Stephanie McDade. We will also have delicious homemade baked goods and Sebastian Joe's Ice Cream for sale, the proceeds from which will benefit Jungle Red's scholarship to send a high school student to Aveda Institute. Whether this is your first experience with Jungle Red Salon Spa Gallery or your regular go-to, it's time to relax, kickback, and REDesign your Wednesday happy hour RHYTHM.

Meet the Artists:
Stephanie McDade is a freelance artist and illustrator. Her art is regularly on exhibit at local shows and businesses the Minneapolis area. Stephanie's illustrations focus strongly on symbolism, mainly animal symbolism, as well as the Western symbolism for colors. Her illustrations although very detail oriented, usually express simple messages. Stephanie draws her inspiration from both nature and cultural experiences.

Jonathon "Pseudo-Manitou" Reese is an emerging artist in the Twin Cities area. Jonathon sites his work to be the result of wild mental concept associations derived in his "dyslexic scatterbrain." After the conceptual phase, he reins in ideas then his planning, inking, and finally digitizing his design.
Of his work Jonathon states, "I don't believe in one-time masterpieces; I believe in breeding en masse through printing and digital media, complete with mutations, letting my work migrate outside of restrictive environments, just as nature has proven most effective. I will risk offending half my audience with my politics, but it's never personal. I hope viewers of my work then ask questions of themselves, even if it must first start with statement challenging them to do so. I want immediate impact, but I never intend to be taken too seriously. And at the end of the day, the art is the body that makes 'Pseudo-Manitou'; and Jonathan Reese is separated from that."

Time for Summer Fun in the Sun!

… and time for some SPF awareness!

Welcome to July! The sun has certainly graced us with its presence so far this month! While this does provide a steady source of vitamin D and the perfect conditions for some summer fun, the use of an SPF is crucial to protect your skin and hair from the aging and cancerous effects of the sun.  Did you know?  SPF 15 blocks 94% of UV rays!
What does SPF really mean?  SPF stands for Sun Protection Factor.  The number tells you how much more time you can spend in the sun before reddening or burning versus if you were not protected with SPF.  For example, with an SPF 15 you can withstand the sun’s rays 15 times longer than without.
How does Sunscreen Work?  Sunscreen products that have an SPF contain “active ingredients” which are the additives that protect you from the UV radiation.  These ingredients can fall into two categories:  Chemical Absorbers or Physical Filters.  Chemical absorbers provide a thin film on the skin that actually absorbs the sun’s rays before they penetrate the skin.  Physical filters reflect UV rays away from the skin.
What’s the difference between UVA and UVB and why should I care?  UVA rays account for 95% of the radiation that reaches the earth from the sun.  And although UVA rays are less intense than UVB rays, they are actually prevalent equally throughout the year (yes, even in our cold Minnesota winters!) and can penetrate clouds and glass.  UVA rays penetrate deeper into the skin and are the type of radiation found most commonly in tanning beds, and have long been known to cause wrinkling and hyperpigmentation of the skin.  UVB, on the other hand, tends to damage the more outer layers of the skin and is what typically causes sunburn and reddening.  The intensity of UVB rays varies by season, location, and time of day, does not penetrate clouds but does bounce off of reflective surfaces such as snow or ice.  So what does this mean to you?  Sunscreen is important no matter what time of year it is, and just because you’re not burning does not mean that you aren’t causing damage to your skin and potentially putting yourself at risk for skin cancer.
Yikes!  What can I do to protect myself?  This may seem obvious -- avoid getting sunburn and tanning beds.  During peak sun hours, seek the shade.  Use a sunscreen with a broad-spectrum (UVA & UVB) and an SPF 15 or higher, or SPF 30 or higher if you will be outside for an extended period.  Reapply sunscreen every couple of hours.  At Jungle Red, we love the following products because they are versatile and nurturing!

Glō • therapeutics Oil Free SPF 40 – This product provides broad spectrum protection from the sun's damaging rays while nourishing antioxidants fortify the skin from other free-radicals that cause the skin to age. It is formulated especially for the delicate skin on the face and offers a lightweight feel that is great for any skin type, including oily and sensitive.

Glō • Minerals Pressed Powder – The pressed powder foundation has a semi-matte finish for sheer to full coverage, and is recommended for all skin types. Glō • Minerals  is pharmaceutical grade 100% mineral make-up with a natural SPF 18 - 22.  Protect yourself from everyday sun exposure during your morning makeup application with the swoop of a powder brush!

Glō • Minerals Loose Powder - Glō • Minerals loose powder foundation creates a dewy look for medium to full coverage. It is recommended for dry to normal skin types. Like the pressed power, this loose powder alternative is pharmaceutical grade 100% mineral make-up with a natural SPF 18 - 22.  Yes,  it can be that easy to protect your face from UV rays with this product!

Nioxin Scalp Shield – This is a lightweight spray with SPF 20 that protects the delicate scalp skin and hair follicles from the aging effects of the sun and sunburn, which is crucial to maintain a healthy head of hair.  Unlike regular sunscreens, it won’t feel greasy in the hair.  It is especially effective for those with thinning hair.

Simply Organic Sun Shine Spray - Don’t forget about your hair when you think about sunscreen!  Simply Organic Sun Shine Spray will condition and treat your hair, and protects it from the constant exposure to the sun.  This product also acts as a heat protective shield when you blowdry, flat iron or curl  your hair, and adds shine and silky texture.  It does not build up or cause hair to become greasy over time. It is ideal for dry and lifeless hair, creating a weightless shine that lasts.

Custom Airbrush Tanning - Try a customized airbrush tan rather than overexposure to the sun!  While this will not protect you from UV exposure, it will prevent the urge to spend too much time soaking up those rays to achieve a bronze glow.  Get the pigment you want without putting yourself at risk for skin cancer and other aging effects of trying to get tan.

pssst!  We have a special going on through July -- Buy One Get One Free on Custom Airbrush Tans.  Bring a friend and discover how lovely it is to get bronzed without getting burned!

Remember, you only have one set of skin -- NOW is the time to start taking care of it!  You can never reverse the damage done to your skin by UV radiation.

If you have any questions about any of the above, feel free to call or stop by the salon anytime as we are happy to help you with your SPF needs!

Dream Yourself Awake: Solo Exhibition by Benjamin I. Flint

We invite you to join us for "Dream Yourself Awake," a collection of works by Benjamin I. Flint. Dream Yourself Awake is a unique and dynamic exhibit, exploring the ideas of 2012 and the apocalypse. The exhibit will be up the whole month of July so be sure to check out the gallery after your next service or pop in anytime during normal business hours!

Interview with the artist:

What do you believe the future holds?
"The future is unwritten. We are moving into a new way of existing and it’s up to us to make the choice of how we would like to exist. The process we are in now is manifesting our true nature."

What is the message you wish to express through your work?
“The times we are in now reflect all of the history and emotion of human kind. When you come right down to it, it really is as simple as the choice between Love and Fear, and fear is an illusion. Fear is the food of its own creation and we do have a choice. I have come to understand that the system is alive unto itself and you cannot judge it for trying to survive, just as you cannot judge someone for hunting to eat, to survive. We must teach a new way in order to manifest a new world. We in turn will use this knowledge to literally create a heaven on earth beyond religion, beyond syntax, and beyond fear. Each and every one of us is the key. We are literally the center of our own universe so lucky to have an individual perspective and to have been separated from the source only to return again. When you look into your neighbor’s eyes even deeper, into their heart, you see yourself. You go beyond words, beyond judgment, beyond fear. You just “know”. You see yourself as they see you. We are indeed one.”

How has your artistic process changed or inspired you?
“This journey has opened my eyes and heart. Through the process I have experienced new life, death, loss, love and joy, but most of all I have come to fully understand the great awakening we are all going through. I am going through the very process of self realization I hope to illustrate with this show.”
Please come join us in a truly one-of-a-kind, beautiful journey through the arts.  For more information on Benjamin I. Flint visit http://www.mnartists.org/artistHome.do?rid=102440
Our Newest Art Exhibit Features Work by Emily Hadfield and Stephanie Wittchow

We invite you to come admire our newest art exhibit featuring the work of local artists Emily Hadfield and Stephanie Wittchow. This interesting and playful exhibit is bursting with artwork from a variety of mediums: from oil and beeswax, to wood press prints, to ink, to mixed media on wood panels. Be sure to wander through the gallery when you are in for your next service or feel free to stop by anytime during normal business hours. The show will run through mid-June.

Emily Hadfield:

Emily Hadfield was born and raised just north of Madison, Wisconsin. She is a 2011 graduate from the University of Minnesota-Twin Cities majoring in Fine Arts with a minor in French. Her travels in Europe continue to influence her work and her current position as a nanny in the Twin Cities inspires playfulness in her artwork.

Emily is a painter who explores the connection between architectural spaces and its traces of human experience. Her series of cityscapes and interiors are primarily oil on wood with additional mixed media. She is interested in the timelessness of daily life that often lingers within a space long after a structure is vacated from its occupants. Emily’s curiosity stems from her adventures abroad as well as her daily work with children.

To inquire further about her work, please contact Emily at ilymagoo@gmail.com.

Stephanie Wittchow:

A Wisconsin native as well, Stephanie Wittchow grew up the small town of Rosendale. But Stephanie dreamed of life beyond the cornfields: she sought adventure and exposure to all the world has to offer. Although Stephanie didn't know where her journey would lead, she was certain that one thing would remain constant: her passion for art. After attending the University of Wisconsin-Steven's Point, Stephanie moved to Minneapolis and landed her dream job as a graphic designer.

Stephanie incessantly seeks inspiration from the world around her to continuously evolve her work. Her favorite part of her work as a designer is transforming the traditionally mundane into conceptually strong and aesthetically pleasing works of art, all through the use of a clever twist. She is inspired and challenged by the idea that great design can set the stage for how people experience the world and react to it.

As Seasons Change, Colors Reign

Say good riddance to those dark sweatshirts and coats and dig out that bucket of floral dresses!  Spring is officially here so it’s time to switch up your color palette, and I’m not just talking about your wardrobe.  Your make-up palette needs a change, as well.  Lighten up your look by steering away from those dark, heavy colors of Autumn and Winter and go nude!  Go on and venture to look like you’re barely wearing any make-up and reveal the natural you.  Maybe you have heard this before in past season’s trends but that’s because these muted and nude tones are so versatile and timeless that they practically work for every look.

Here’s how to create a sun-kissed glow perfect for those sultry sunny days:

First things first: moisturize!  This step is essential.  With moisturizer as the base, your make-up will last a lot longer because it will have something to set onto, and it helps to keep the skin from looking scaly.  And the best part is you won’t look worn out by the end of the day so you’ll be ready to go out for a cocktail after a hard day at work.

Eyes:  First you need lid primer to prevent any oil from interfering with your eye make-up.  Lid primers help the shadow stick in place.  Then apply eye shadow, liner and mascara in respective order.  Work on your eyes first so that you can brush away the loose shadow that falls onto your cheeks without ruining the makeup on your face.  For shadow, choose warm browns, champagne colors with shimmer.  For liner, choose brown, or for a pop of color play with a forest green or navy blue!

Foundation:  For more oily skin use a mattifying liquid foundation or a pressed powder base. For drier skin use a tinted moisturizer or satin finish liquid foundation; another great option is a loose powder base that will give you a more dewy finish.

Eyebrows:  Use a brow powder or pencil to fill in the sparse areas - this will simply accentuate the shape of your brows.  Careful not to push down on the brush/pencil too hard in order to avoid hard lines.  You’ll be amazed how much of a difference it can make in bringing out your facial features!

Blush/Bronzer:  To enhance any look or to achieve a natural-looking, sun-kissed glow apply your blush or bronzer in an “E” pattern on the face, next to the hairline.  The brush should lightly wash over the forehead, temples, cheekbones and jaw.

Last but definitely not least: lips.  A soft coral or deep pink color will make your lips look natural yet luscious.  Finishing up with a shiny gloss will make your lips pop against matted skin, bringing multiple textures to your face which is always a plus!

For some extra make-up tips and for professional recommendations on color choices that bring out your natural beauty, come into Jungle Red to check out our gloMinerals make-up line and renew your palette.  This May Jungle Red will be hosting a Make-Up Happy Hour for the first 15 people to RSVP!  Enjoy a custom make-up application by one of Jungle Red’s make-up artists, hors d’oeuvres, wine, specialty martinis, and as a bonus you will receive a free gift with purchase along with opportunities to win gloMinerals make-up throughout the evening!  For more details please see below.  Remember, it’s time for nude!

Achieving the Perfect Eyebrow

When was the last time you took a good look at your eyebrows?

Most people probably don’t realize how much the shape of their eyebrows can change the look of their face. We’ve all seen eyebrow disasters due to overgrowth or the opposite, overplucking. If you have eyebrows that don’t match your face shape you can benefit from a professional eyebrow shaping and wax. Waxing isn’t only to get rid of the dreaded unibrow but also to clean up the rest of your brows and eliminate any stray hairs. There are countless examples online of before and after photos that show how eyebrows can change your look for the better. The right eyebrows can wake up your face and really showcase your eyes, and this goes for both men and women.

The right eyebrow shape for you depends on what your face shape is. There are six basic face shapes, and knowing your shape can help you and your brow stylist choose an eyebrow shape that works for you. The face shapes are: oval, round, long, square, heart, and diamond.

You can determine your face shape by pulling any hair off of your face and staring straight into a mirror. Look at the length and width of your face as well as the overall shape. Choose the shape from below that best matches the shape of your face. You can always ask a friend or two for their opinion if you’re not sure! Below are some general guidelines on which brow shape is best for your face, your professional brow stylist will help you choose a shape specific to you!

Oval: If this is you, you’re in luck! This is considered the ideal face shape by many people. You should go for a brow that has a soft angle, like Jennifer Aniston.

Round: To elongate a round face, you want an eyebrow that has a high arch. An eyebrow like Marilyn Monroe’s creates more vertical lines and helps make the face look longer.

Long: To make a long face look shorter, horizontal brows are best. Check out Jessica Alba’s brows for an examp

Square: To balance out a square face, try a brow with a bit of an angle like Uma Thurman.

Heart: Soften a heart shaped face by going for a rounded brow. Gwyneth Paltrow’s brows are a good example.

Diamond: Diamond face shapes can benefit from curved brows. Halle Berry softens her face with a curvy brow.

We hope this information will help you to accentuate your natural beauty by being choosy about your brows! Make an appointment with our brow specialist and esthetician Jodi and see what a new pair of brows can do for you! To schedule your brow session, please call Jungle Red Salon at 612.870.0653.

“Fantastical” featuring work by artist Robert Gullickson

We invite you to feast your eyes upon our newest art exhibit “Fantastical” featuring the work of Robert Gullickson. The opening reception will take place at Jungle Red on Wednesday, April 4th from 6-8 pm. Please join us for evening filled with beautiful artwork, great company, complimentary wine, and live music. If you are unable to make the opening reception, be sure to wander through the gallery after your next service. The show will be up the whole month of April.

Robert Gullickson captures his “Fantastical Photographic Images” through bold colorful expression – whether figuratively or abstractly.  To achieve these brilliant images Robert lets his imagination run wild: he states it is “from his mind’s eye” which his photographs are born.

Robert is known for his ability to transform everyday objects and surroundings into unrecognizable works of beauty. “You will never believe what this photo is of,” Robert says of many of his pieces.  His intention is to show the hidden beauty in the surroundings that we often take for granted.

Q & A WITH THE ARTIST:

When did you start your venture into the art world?
“I started in photography at age 16 when I was given my first SLR camera by my uncle John.”

How would you describe your style?
“I suppose you could describe my style as Eccentric Abstract."

What drew you to this style of art?
“I wasn't so much drawn to this style. I believe it found me…through experimentation and the evolution of my desires.”

Have you experimented with other forms of art?
“Yes, I have dabbled with and still play with oils on canvas and charcoal drawings."

What is your favorite piece that you have ever created?
“My favorite piece, if I had to choose just one, would be "Phantom.” The reason I like it best is because it was my first piece to reveal the hidden images within, those not seen when I originally took the photograph. I refer to these images as phantoms. If you look closely, these phantoms can be seen in many of my pieces.”
What makes your art unique?
“I use a simple 18-55mm lens on my Nikon DSLR and don’t use Photoshop or other high-end photo editing software. I utilize natural and man-made lighting to achieve the photo effect I am looking for. Many times I use everyday products for lighting and other photography needs. I am a minimalistic photographer. I believe that if you need fancy software to make a photo, there is a problem that lies in your ability to take a photo.”

Who inspires you?
“I found my inspiration in the photography of my uncle John. His support of my passion for photography helped to shape my work into what it is today.”
