My vision that sparked Jungle Red Salon Spa Gallery was to create a space where people wanted to spend their time because they felt good when they were here.  To me this means a place where customers can feel comfortable and at-home, and feel supported through an open dialogue about their needs.  Along with this, it means running a business where employees are able to grow, succeed, prosper and fulfill their own dreams! I am passionate about supporting others in their process of loving themselves and feeling good from within. As stylists we get to create art that people wear every day that brings out each person’s innate individual beauty. Caring for the body and skin also enhance personal wellness and satisfaction, which is the reason that since opening Jungle Red in 2001 I have expanded the business to include the full spectrum of personal-care service options. I am called to give back to the community as there are so many wonderful organizations that enrich the lives of those around us who are in need. This is why I have built a business with a strong foundation in participating in community events and fundraisers.  In my free time I love to exercise, practice yoga, ski, travel, spend time with my family and friends watching movies, going to concerts or the theater, and appreciating art in various forms.

THE ARTIST :: D. HELENE WOODS D. Helene Woods is a Minnesota artist exploring the connections between joy and darkness in our everyday lives...because life is creepy. She paints faceless colorful figures with imagined internal biology. The figures are placed in scenarios of everyday life that create narratives of a world both joyful and fraught. Her work takes an analytical view of the lives of women, and the many situations in their lives where pleasure and peace combine with the frustrations and threats of contemporary culture. At first glance, her bright colors and imagery often deceive the viewer to thinking everything is happy and serene, but as one engages, dangers are revealed.

THE ARTIST :: BRIAN BROUGHTEN Brian's artwork takes a critical view of social, political and cultural issues. His work intends to deconstruct the American dream. By engaging subjects as diverse as road trips, sewing, and drug addiction his work reproduces familiar visual signs, and then arranges them into conceptually new, layered pieces. With a highly experimental approach, a variety of materials and processes are applied to combine these themes into mixed media pieces that feature mundane domestic objects juxtaposed with whimsical objects, and often embellished with stenciled text. While there may or may not be material similarities between the different projects, they are linked by recurring concerns and through the subject matter. The subject matter of each body of work determines the materials used to create.

Sometimes his work was created in notebooks given as gifts, and sometimes it was in less appropriate places like on the backs of pamphlets handed out at church and even in stairwells of his childhood home (thanks to his art-loving step mother). With an intention of teaching future generations about the importance of art, Drew completed a degree in Art Education. He hoped to teach how art can be an outlet, how it brings beauty to this world, and how wealth is not necessary to create.

When he was 24 years old, Michael began a 10-year sentence for a drug conviction. While some would have simply done their time and left prison the same person they entered as, Michael made a promise to himself: that wouldn’t be his story. He set out to prove to others and to himself that there is more to him than his history. He had always been interested in art, and it wasn’t until 2004 that Michael first picked up a drawing pencil. From that moment on, he was consumed with a passion for art, and his talent swiftly propelled him towards his future. Instead of letting those years slip away, Michael took full advantage of the time he was given and developed a talent that had remained dormant for far too long. He quickly moved from pencil drawings to oil paintings in less than a year and the progress that he was making made his desire to create simply insatiable. In 2006, with his talent in oil paintings firmly established, a family tragedy helped Michael to realize that his talent could perhaps serve an even deeper purpose than he’d ever imagined. His ongoing mission is to help heal people, even if in the smallest way, through the gift of art. With the help of his aunt, Mary Carter and his mother, Diana Williams, and close friend Fredrick Morgenstern the Adam Carter Foundation was born. Thie Mission of The Adam carter Foundation is to create a few moments when the loss of a child disappears, and in those moments, the memories of the child overshadow the sadness and the sorrow felt. We believe in those moments. Our painting and our words shift the haunting emptiness to a never-ending presence

July in the Gallery :: Dayna Hudson Dayna is local Minneapolis artist known as LadyD. She’s been an artist working out of North MInneapolis for seven years. She received her bachelor's degree from Minneapolis College of Art and Design back in 2003 and has participated in group and solo shows all over the Twin Cities. Her impressionistic and colorful works are inspired by the world around us, with human beings and their natures reflecting both their physical and internal surroundings. Recently she has drawn inspiration from local nature, making strides towards broadening her subject matter. She's also inspired by subcultures and dance and has been recently featured at the Prince tribute show at the Gamut Gallery, the Reverb show at Macphail Music College, Art for the Eyes at the Driftwood, and live-paintings and displays at the Cabooze, Amsterdam, Honey, and Spring Street Tavern.

June in the Gallery :: Ben Prenevost "The face is a drug, releasing an effect unsurpassed by it’s visage." Ben Prenevost is a visual artist with a passion for portrait and figure drawings of the female muse. He began experimenting with the face drug more often in 2014 and by 2015 he was completely hooked. Ben’s portrait illustrations are best known for their intricate pencil hatching details-- focused predominantly on soulful eyes and storied lips. Much of the subject’s face is kept light of graphite rendering to allow Ben’s coloring texture to show though, when he applies watercolors and watercolor pencil to his illustrations. Coming from an artistic family in the northern suburbs of Minneapolis Ben has enjoyed drawing since childhood. He has a long track record working as a digital color artist of comic books, film and television production and advertising art. When Ben isn't drawing, he enjoys cycling. A lot.

May in the Gallery :: L'Andrae' Bradley L’Andrae’ Bradley currently resides in St. Paul, and has been included in various exhibitions throughout Ohio, New York, Minnesota, Virginia and the United Kingdom. His recent work depicts the ups and downs of life, and includes themes that tie to his personal practice of daily meditation. He incorporates a variety of colors and patterns by using a combination of Prismacolor Markers, Micron Pens, and watercolors. Overall, L’Andrae’s work has always been about the evolution of doodling and applying the awareness of the action itself into a work of art. It’s a style that he’s been doing and re- discovering for almost 20 years.

THE ARTISTS :: JULIA C. SPENCER: At age 13, Julia C. Spencer had the opportunity to attend a Summer Expression Session class at the Minneapolis College of Art and Design. It was the experience of this class that propelled and fostered Julia’s dream of becoming a comic book artist. In 2003, Julia attended the Perpich Center for Arts Education where she intensively studied dance. Julia went on to enroll at the Minneapolis College of Art and Design as an Illustrator major, in 2005, but later her interests moved more to the area of Photography. In the spring of 2007, she became sick and stopped attending MCAD. Julia is currently working in the mediums of painting, photography, pastels, colored pencils, marker illustrations and jewelry. ANDREW BRAUNBERGER: Andrew Braunberger has been creating images, since discovering his thumbs. The artistic beginnings for Andrew involved working with soft pastels, in high school. He continued to love working with pastels as a medium, through his collegiate studies at the University of North Dakota. In 1992, Andrew graduated with a BA in Arts and Sciences through the Honors Program at UND—he has continued to work with pastels and consistently practice his craft, ever since. Many of Andrews works are in acrylic and oil, often with soft pastels used on top of these other media. Within his work you will notice vibrant colors and interaction within varying levels of opacity. Andrew also dabbles in digital art, but prefers the tactile experience of other media, more so than working digitally. ALLAN BENSON: In Allan’s words, “I create colorful patterns and shapes to make your eyes light up and to make the painting pop off the walls and ceilings and run away”. Allan’s paintings and drawings of landscape, architecture, people, and still-life are expressions of what his vision of reality is. He creates images from what he sees and of his imagination. Allan is inspired by plant life, the shapes of the land and architecture. He experiments and plays with perspective and dimension on the canvas and then fills it up with paint. Allan uses color and black outline to make the shapes pop out and appear more realistic. He likes to let his creativity run wild. Allan recognized his abilities and desires to express himself through art in a class at Opportunity Partners, a Minnesota nonprofit organization that works alongside people with disabilities. Alan continues to strengthen his artistic visions and techniques in classes with his art mentor. Allan has exhibited his work at the Hennepin County Library, Hopkins Center for the Arts, Opportunity Partners headquarters, Vision Loss Resources and Munka Beans Coffee Shop. His painting, Flower at Home, won 2nd place in painting at the Sister Kenney Annual International Art Show in May, 2009.

H. Leigh Art
H. Leigh is an acrylic painter who captures intimate connections with horses and uses them as a form of transformation and healing in the creative process. H. Leigh grew up as an only child of a single working parent and spent most of her time with horses. They have been integral to H’s recovery through grief and loss throughout her life. She traveled around the country with renaissance festivals through her early adult life and then became an advocate for youth and homelessness. Her professional background of advocacy within area shelters over an 18 year span, along with her own recovery, sparked her motion into painting the healing journey by using her deep connection with horses. Horses have listened to her deepest core and have never judged; they are honest; they are patient. Horses are prey animals and naturally respond to changes in their environment. They make great therapists due to this fight or flight response because they detect unheard shifts in their atmosphere. H. Leigh is a published poet, published painter, and a published photographer. She holds a B.A. in Creative Healing in Human Development; a degree she created to fit the love of nature and arts based education and psychology. H. enjoys researching creative processes, neuroscience, nature and arts based developmental psychology, and wishes to inspire people while they are on their own healing journey.

Yuya Negishi is a Japanese visual artist based in Minneapolis, Minnesota. He was born in Showa Village, Gunma. A small farming community in the mountains beyond Tokyo. Yuya draws artistic inspiration from the memories and sensations of growing up in the Japanese countryside and approaches his work in the spirit of play, often exploring new ideas and mediums. A combination of SUMI-e painting, calligraphy and other classical Japanese mediums and motifs; his work is an expression of cultural heritage, wonder and amusement. Along with being a working artist Yuya is an active member of the artistic community and also teaches Japanese artistic style to students in grade school up to college, and participates in public art projects and murals.

Matthew Gaulke has been experiementing with art since gradeschool, from comic book characters to oil painting, and most recently marker drawing. Through the turbulence of life, including finding and later losing faith in religion, Matthew has found that making art is the only thing that gives his life meaning... Next to family and pizza. His current inspiration comes from super models because he finds them to be both unique looking and beautiful, which is what he hopes to achieve with his own art -- something unique but still beautiful. His collection of marker-drawn portriats will include a range of stripped down line drawings and drawing brilliantly placed shapes, color and shading, leading the viewer to engage with the depth and intricacy of the figure. Matthew tries not to over think his art, but rather just have fun with his creations and share that with others.

THE ARTIST : James Foreman titles this body of work "MYSTICAL INQUIRIES" because he views artwork, the process of creating artwork, and the interaction of a viewer with artwork, as a mystical process of transformation. He believes that such transformation opens the heart even deeper into the wonders of life. The symbols in his work have no particular intentional meaning but are playful inquiries into the joys within the viewer. Within the work, that the symbols, and the background abstraction, are painted in a manner that evokes a deeper presence within the self. The paintings in this collection are titled as questions which intend to further evoke an attitude of exploration. James' philosophy on living his life is the same as how he paints: exploring the presence and direction of these mysteries through both painting and other art forms.

THE ARTIST: Jodi Bee has a BFA in studio art: drawing and painting, as well as a BS in Art Education (K-12) and loves to be both an apprentice and a mentor. She creates colorful and inspirational art ranging from mixed media to mandalas to paintings and illustrations. Whether she's pulling together images, painting or drawing, she finds inspiration all around her. She collects and processes used books, cutting them apart and filing the images she likes. In her February exhibition you will get to experience how she shuffles images together that seem to relate or connect somehow - perhaps in feeling, color or narrative. This body of highly detailed collage work emphasizes geometry. An almost musical movement is created by repeating shapes in a rhythmical sequence. Circles are a common link among this body of work, representing wholeness, completeness and purity. Circles are the most important and universal geometric symbol because it is implicit in other important symbols such as the sacred halo, the face of a clock, the ring, the life cycle, as well as the stars and planets of our cosmos. The subject matter explores the sublime feelings of awe and wonder, and depict the transcendant moment of altered consciousness that unifies and unveils our human experience with others.

ELLE HETTINGER is an experimental, fresh acrylic/multi-media artist living and working in Minneapolis, Minnesota. Having travelled extensively through Italy and Mexico has provided much inspiration for her. "Many know that years ago I was ‘gifted’ with a series of much illness to begin a journey to introspection of my life and to those surrounding me. This included an out loud revelation purporting ‘I can’t draw nor paint.’ With that, I signed up for my first art class through MCAD, a traveling sketch class. Since then, I have taken classes in botanical watercolor, acrylic, American watercolor, encaustic, imprint stamping, shading, drawing and more. Additionally, I have had the fortunate experience to create art in the countries of Italy and Mexico. Art initially provided me with therapeutic, meditative, healing qualities and now continues to provide me with just plain relaxational joy. I have certainly come to look at the world now in so many different ways, through so many lenses and with a totally different set of eyes."

Philip Noyed is an innovative multi-media artist living and working in Minneapolis, Minnesota. He creates luminous photographs, geometric light box illuminations, videos, paintings and mixed media installations. His art work represents the quintessential contemporary art movement making use of creative technology that is changing the way art is viewed today. Bold colors, light, and high-voltage geometric compositions characterize his versatile artworks that he transforms into wall-mounted or free-standing sculptural objects. About His Artistic Process Noyed's art is printed as translucent Lambda C-type transparencies, surface-mounted to clear acrylic, framed in white acrylic, and back lit by LEDs or fluorescent lights. About his process he explains, "I begin by photographing subjects, usually my own oil paintings, at slow shutter speeds, transforming hard-edged, dimensional shapes into vibrant light-emitting compositions." The artist then reworks the photographic images using digital technology, to enhance the color, saturation, temperature and form. "I also skew, distort, cut, replicate and merge the sampled images, creating new kaleidoscopic shapes." A Myriad of Animated Transitions Noyed provides viewers with a mesmerizing experience as a myriad of transitions occur naturally as light passes through the art work. When viewed with 3-D glasses the animated surfaces of his paintings become more hypnotic. His kinetic images provide a dynamic presence that grace many residential and corporate spaces. They combine a modern architectural sensibility with the power to induce relaxation. Geometric Illuminations Noyed's background as a ceramic artist and also an expressionist painter have imbued his artwork with dimension and movement. In addition to skillful application of design elements, color has always been a constant source of inspiration for the artist. His "Geometric Illuminations" series demonstrate the culmination of his exploration of light, color and space. Accurately named, they successfully embrace the essence of of geometric abstract painting and produce a light-filled ambiance. Exhibitions and Accolades Noyed's many one-person and group exhibitions include: Bashimi Art House Gallery, in Salzburg, Austria; Caelum Gallery, in New York City, and Red Bluff Art Gallery, in California; Aria and The Marsh Gallery, both in in Minnesota; among others. His upcoming exhibition "Geometric Illuminations" will be presented at the Phipps Center for the Arts, in Hudson, Wisconsin, May 22 - June 21, 2015. His perspective on art is influenced by living in Japan for three years where he studied ceramics, calligraphy and Noh Theater. "From early childhood, I have spent my life travelling between Sydney, Australia and Saint Paul, Minnesota. I was seldom without a book, a Barbie doll and a set of colouring pencils. I have been fascinated by art, travel, culture, and making things with my hands from a very early age and chose to study art, theatre and design throughout school and university. After a decade in the corporate arena and a graduate degree in Design and an Executive MBA, I decided to leave the corporate life for one where I could pursue my true passion – to develop a unique and recognisable style that would allow me to become a self sustaining artist. As a collage artist I am fascinated with the use of colour, pattern and texture and try to combine these elements in my work in an innovative and exciting way using a combination of adhesives, papers and embellishment materials. At the heart of my materials is my growing collection of papers, which I’ve gathered from around the world, and includes hand dyed papers from India, woven papers from Asia and printed papers from Australia and the USA.Major influences in my work include pop art and pop culture, Hollywood, music and fashion. Games from my childhood have also had a major influence in my latest works, which are rich with hidden imagery. As a child I spent hours hunting through “Where’s Wally” books, examining “Spot the Difference” games and piecing together intricate jigsaw puzzles. My technique is still evolving and employs an exploratory and playful process, which can incorporate costuming, set design and lighting, photography, graphic manipulation, image transferring, print making, collage and painting."

Upon entering retirement, Duane has committed himself to his artistic creation full time. Layering Spackle mixed with pigments helps creates his structural and textural paintings. Color also plays a large role in his work. Birch trees are of particular influence to him as is the emotions behind photographs of nature.

Her artwork has consistently shared a broad spectrum of media and technique. “Painting women is one of my most intriguing processes because they have, fortunately or unfortunately, an inescapable aesthetic. They are perceived to exist on a shallow level to much of the world. I paint these portraits with ink and watercolor to explore techniques that feature emotional plasticity, such as dripping, splattering, running, or by using reflective surfaces to explore vanity and introspection. DOLAN CYR a.k.a. Rachel Wacker ARTIST BIO Rachel Wacker (a.k.a. Dolan Cyr) graduated with honors from the University of Notre Dame in 1999 with a B. A. in studio art and a concentration in philosophy and literature. While at the university, she participated in the St. Mary’s Rome Program and received a Kellogg Institute Grant to study “The Maasai Tribe and the Color Red” in Kenya. Following graduation, Rachel spent a year volunteering on the Turtle Mountains Indian Reservation in North Dakota. Rachel now resides in the Lowertown Arts District where she is a full time artist, community art event designer, and emerging curator. She is an active member of the Lowertown First Fridays Committee and the resident curator for 262 Studios’ public galleries. Since 2009, Rachel has collaborated with over two hundred artists, musicians, poets, small businesses and neighborhood organizations to create roughly 70 community art events. Rachel began signing her art as Dolan Cyr in 2009 to make a public distinction between her role as a visual artist and her role as an art advocate and organizer. She chose the name in honor of her great grandmothers, Anna Dolan and Victoria Cyr. ARTIST STATEMENT I can’t seem to escape my deep –and perhaps quixotic -desire to understand and reconcile the tension between the physical and the metaphysical. It has fueled both my intellectual life and my art life for as long as I can remember. My artwork is the record of my attempt to make sense of this polarity. Each piece is an experiment aimed at alchemically transforming a private experience into a physical object that communicates something of the metaphysical to the viewer. The private experiences at the core of each piece is as likely to be anchored in an emotion as in a philosophical query or an effort to make sense of the days’ news. "When I started painting in late 2013, it was a well-needed release from the various pressures of life. I had always wanted to paint, but had never pursued it. In my first year of painting I learned techniques and skills from some very exceptional artists. The one thing they all had in common was encouraging their students to listen to their heart. I discovered quickly that my heart had several messages for me, the majority of them being that I need to remember there is beauty in the world, and to constantly seek it and share it. And this is what I do with my art. I consider myself an intuitive mixed media artist. I usually do not begin with any one plan for a painting, and very often it evolves into several completely different paintings before I consider it complete. When I feel like I've listened and received whatever message my heart is telling me, I stop. Brant Kingman has long been a staple of Minneapolis art culture but his journey to become an artist started many years before coming to the midwest. After graduating from Amherst University on the east coast in 1976, he traveled Europe at the encouragement of a classmate to study and produce art in the museums of France, Italy, England and Spain. Upon returning to the US, he spent 7 years in New York City drawing artistic inspiration from the urban environment and deep, life experiences. Brant eventually moved back to his hometown of Minneapolis, having brought with him a new love of fatherhood that inspired the creation of many new works of art from rocket ships to tree houses. His work continued to evolve after acquiring his well-known studio space in Northeast Minneapolis where he devoted himself to working with sculpture as well as painting. He describes his process of making art as being similar to the process of meditation, time disappears when he enters his studio.

Born in Lima, Peru December 1984. I have been painting, drawing, building and customizing things since I was little. I have been inspired by the work of many artists such as Drew Brophy, Josh Lemke, Adam Turman, Heather Brown, Diego Rivera, and Jackson Pollock, among others. I studied graphic design at The Art Institutes International Minnesota, and now I’m working as an artist/shaper at Idol Surfboards. I have been lucky to have always been surrounded by water. From growing up riding waves on the coast of Peru, to surfing Lake Superior or paddle boarding around the cities, being in the water feels like home. As a surfer, I have learned to understand and draw energy provided by waves to get inspiration. That’s where my main source of inspiration comes from - not only from the thrill of riding waves, but from energy provided by the elements and people that surround me.

Lois grew up with a deep love for animals, horses and dogs in particular. She has an extensive background in photography and art, and for more than 14 years she has professionally photographed horses, pets and their families. She transforms her photographs into works of art using a combination of digital and wet media, and creates fine art paintings and reproductions for sale, as well as commissioned portraits for clients. The only one in her family to have the desire to ride and work with horses, her parents finally yielded to riding lessons for her and eventually bought her a horse at a young age. She never looked back, and in her adult years raised a beautiful Swedish Warmblood horse from birth, and trained with him to the international levels of Dressage. Her lifelong expertise as a rider and lover of horses has translated into an expert eye when photographing and painting horses. She knows what makes a good image of a horse, and understands what people want when looking for equine images. In addition, Lois has been involved with all breeds of show dogs and family pets for many years and photographs them on location or in the studio, creating beautiful works of art to cherish our best friends forever. Lois is a Canon Par Excellence Award winner, a PPA Master Artist and a Certified Professional Photographer. Her paintings have been published in several high-end, coffee table art books, and she has won several national awards for her work, such as: 2013 Platinum Artist of the Year, 2013 Top Ten Imager, 2012 Canon Par Excellence Award, and 2012 Gold Artist of the Year.

She is currently exploring the human experience through the lens of belief systems—why do we let go of our child-like innocence in exchange for adult ideals? Avenues provides transitional housing and support services to homeless youth in our community providing stability and addressing crisis needs and long-term goals. Mike is a Twin Cities-based photographer, videographer, and DJ who has collaborated with many Minneapolis musicians and artists for over a decade. He will be honoring what would have been the eve of Prince's 60th Birthday by focusing on a classic Minneapolis Sound, with emphasis on the music of Prince, his peers, and his followers. As a special treat this will be an audio/visual performance with tracks backed by their music videos. Don't Miss it!!

D. Helene Woods is a Minnesota artist exploring the connections between joy and darkness in our everyday lives...because life is creepy. She paints faceless colorful figures with imagined internal biology. The figures are placed in scenarios of everyday life that create narratives of a world both joyful and fraught. Her work takes an analytical view of the lives of women, and the many situations in their lives where pleasure and peace combine with the frustrations and threats of contemporary culture. At first glance, her bright colors and imagery often deceive the viewer to thinking everything is happy and serene, but as one engages, dangers are revealed.

THE MUSICIAN :: LAURA HUGO
Laura is a singer/songwriter originally from the Navajo reservation, hosts a residency at the Troubadour Wine Bar in Minneapolis as well as tours at many local music clubs.

THE ARTIST :: BRIAN BROUGHTEN
Brian's artwork takes a critical view of social, political and cultural issues. His work intends to deconstruct the American dream. By engaging subjects as diverse as road trips, sewing, and drug addiction his work reproduces familiar visual signs, and then arranges them into conceptually new, layered pieces.

With a highly experimental approach, a variety of materials and processes are applied to combine these themes into mixed media pieces that feature mundane domestic objects juxtaposed with whimsical objects, and often embellished with stenciled text.

While there may or may not be material similarities between the different projects, they are linked by recurring concerns and through the subject matter. The subject matter of each body of work determines the materials used to create.

DJ Rick Ausland has been packing dance floors in the Twin Cities for more than 8 years. Specializing in house, 90’s hip hop, and dance music, DJ Rick will keep your party groovin’. A tap dancer and drummer, he also performs with the Minneapolis-based Buckets and Tap Shoes.

Energy itself cannot be contained, only transformed from one form to another. Each of Holly Oehme's paintings captures this moment of transformation; whether it's the shimmer of life in the depths of the sea or the death of a star in the expansion of the solar system, Oehme's paintings represent the capacity of change.

Using a mixed media approach including acrylics and water, Oehme generates other-worldly settings that bring a uniqueness to any environment. Whether it represents intergalactic landscapes or magnified coral, each piece is able to evolve into something new.

THE ARTIST :: DREW BODE
Drew has been creating art ever since he can remember. Sometimes his work was created in notebooks given as gifts, and sometimes it was in less appropriate places like on the backs of pamphlets handed out at church and even in stairwells of his childhood home (thanks to his art-loving step mother). With an intention of teaching future generations about the importance of art, Drew completed a degree in Art Education. He hoped to teach how art can be an outlet, how it brings beauty to this world, and how wealth is not necessary to create.

Always deeply interested in Philosophy, exploring consciousness and theories of existence, some of the questions you will find incorporated into his current work in a visual way are: how do metaphysical spheres of thought converge in our minds, and what does that look like visually? how do things like music shape our consciousness and deepen our reality?

Drew finds it intriguing to treat the figure as something that is intertwined with surrounding elements in its reality. Geometry, lines, colors, mass, etc., can permeate the walls of the figure at random, and the figure's existence seems to have a more cohesive, binding and coexistent relationship within the painting. His main goal is to create a piece where the figure is in a state of harmonious flux with its surroundings, as it is when various instruments align within music. In the case of a painting, the paint is the translation of those notes bridging the physical and metaphysical. A play on outer body and inner body frequencies eminently converging.

THE MUSICIAN : : A CONSTANT COUGH
A Constant Cough began as a solo, noise project in early 2011 by singer-songwriter Victoria Carpenter. Soon after, guitarist Danny Shaheen (Bad Vibes, Fletcher Magellan) joined to help usher the project into its live form. What emerged was a series of duets, interplay between guitar, vocals, the harp, and a myriad of electronic effects. A Constant Cough prods at exploration through storytelling. Listen long enough and the concept of post-traumatic growth reveals itself as a consistent inspiration for the music since the project's inception informing both lyrical content and musical choices.

THE ARTIST : MICHAEL BELLOTTI
When he was 24 years old, Michael began a 10-year sentence for a drug conviction. While some would have simply done their time and left prison the same person they entered as, Michael made a promise to himself: that wouldn’t be his story. He set out to prove to others and to himself that there is more to him than his history. He had always been interested in art, and it wasn’t until 2004 that Michael first picked up a drawing pencil. From that moment on, he was consumed with a passion for art, and his talent swiftly propelled him towards his future. Instead of letting those years slip away, Michael took full advantage of the time he was given and developed a talent that had remained dormant for far too long. He quickly moved from pencil drawings to oil paintings in less than a year and the progress that he was making made his desire to create simply insatiable.

In 2006, with his talent in oil paintings firmly established, a family tragedy helped Michael to realize that his talent could perhaps serve an even deeper purpose than he’d ever imagined. His ongoing mission is to help heal people, even if in the smallest way, through the gift of art. With the help of his aunt, Mary Carter and his mother, Diana Williams, and close friend Fredrick Morgenstern the Adam Carter Foundation was born. Thie Mission of The Adam carter Foundation is to create a few moments when the loss of a child disappears, and in those moments, the memories of the child overshadow the sadness and the sorrow felt. We believe in those moments. Our painting and our words shift the haunting emptiness to a never-ending presence

Jungle Red Salon Spa Gallery will be hosting Master Stylist Patrick Lomantini during his Minnesota stop as he travels across North America cutting hair to benefit local animal shelters and rescues.

MARS is dedicated to providing quality care, client education, and training of companion animals. They are a foster-based rescue group that relies on the aid of volunteers and supporters to provide displaced animals the love and care that they need until they are adopted. Dayna is local Minneapolis artist known as LadyD. She’s been an artist working out of North MInneapolis for seven years. She received her bachelor's degree from Minneapolis College of Art and Design back in 2003 and has participated in group and solo shows all over the Twin Cities.

Her impressionistic and colorful works are inspired by the world around us, with human beings and their natures reflecting both their physical and internal surroundings. Recently she has drawn inspiration from local nature, making strides towards broadening her subject matter.

She's also inspired by subcultures and dance and has been recently featured at the Prince tribute show at the Gamut Gallery, the Reverb show at Macphail Music College, Art for the Eyes at the Driftwood, and live-paintings and displays at the Cabooze, Amsterdam, Honey, and Spring Street Tavern.

MUSICIAN:: House of Fun

The ensemble of House of Fun contains David K on piano, and is joined by Bea Cole on vocals. David channels soulful classic rock and blues and Bea Cole sings in the style of Adelle, Nora Jones and Amy Winehouse - but in her very unique way. "The face is a drug, releasing an effect unsurpassed by it’s visage."

Ben Prenevost is a visual artist with a passion for portrait and figure drawings of the female muse. He began experimenting with the face drug more often in 2014 and by 2015 he was completely hooked. Ben’s portrait illustrations are best known for their intricate pencil hatching details-- focused predominantly on soulful eyes and storied lips. Much of the subject’s face is kept light of graphite rendering to allow Ben’s coloring texture to show though, when he applies watercolors and watercolor pencil to his illustrations.

Coming from an artistic family in the northern suburbs of Minneapolis Ben has enjoyed drawing since childhood. He has a long track record working as a digital color artist of comic books, film and television production and advertising art. When Ben isn't drawing, he enjoys cycling. A lot.


MUSICIAN:: Jade Daniel

Jade Daniel is a musician from Chicago, IL, who specializes in catchy songs with pop and rock influences in a modern style.

Growing up on the outskirts of Chicago listening to classic rock and hip-hop, moving on to a fascination with the pop-punk band Green Day, and more recently an inexplicable devotion to the Indie/EDM remix group The Chainsmokers, Jade’s sound is at once accessible and challenging. He skillfully blends the angst of battling self doubt with the life lessons learned therein.

May in the Gallery :: L'Andrae' Bradley

L’Andrae’ Bradley currently resides in St. Paul, and has been included in various exhibitions throughout Ohio, New York, Minnesota, Virginia and the United Kingdom.

His recent work depicts the ups and downs of life, and includes themes that tie to his personal practice of daily meditation. He incorporates a variety of colors and patterns by using a combination of Prismacolor Markers, Micron Pens, and watercolors.

Overall, L’Andrae’s work has always been about the evolution of doodling and applying the awareness of the action itself into a work of art. It’s a style that he’s been doing and re- discovering for almost 20 years.

MUSICIAN:: David K

David plays piano, guitar, and bass, and performs solo or with The David K Band. His songs are varied and passionate, his performances personal and driven, while his connection with audiences occur with ease.

Come check out the vibrantly stunning artwork of Diana Ellie Vin and Warren Peterson, two Minneapolis visual artists.

Diana was a pencil-only artist, specializing in commission portrait work until she discovered a love for painting in 2014. Diana creates gorgeous and unique portrait work in her signature style that she calls "Squarism". She also enjoys doing chalkboard illustrations, live painting alongside music, and recently has adventured to mural painting creating her first mural at Acapulco Restaurant in Andover, MN.

Warren Peterson has been known for his highly intricate pen-and-ink style along with concert posters. Also developing his passion for painting in 2014, his paintings range from vibrant naturescapes and night skies, to bold portraiture, to visionary sacred geometry. He is also a musician, as WarrenPeace for solo works, and in the band THE BAD MAN, performing gigs in the NE Mpls area.

In a collaborative effort, Warren will be joinging Diana this month in the Jungle Red Gallery. They met at a bonfire before they even begun painting. They quickly grew a passion for it after going through hugely inspiring life transitions. They feel their bodies of work are strong individually, and vibe magically together in a shared space.

Both Diana & Warren will have prints and originals for sale.

Elyse Barnard is a Twin Cities musician and vocalist. With a Bachelor of Music in Vocal Performance from McNally Smith College of music, Elyse spends her time singing and performing with a variety of shows and bands throughout the Cities. You can often find her performing original and R&B covers throughout the cities with her band, Elyse & the Guys. Other bands include: RFactor and Bluewater Kings Band, in which she performs at clubs, weddings and private events. When Elyse is not on stage or serving tables at Hell’s Kitchen, she spends time practicing guitar and bass.

>> Amber Simpson:

Amber, a friend of Diana's hails from Beaufort, South Carolina. While in Omaha, Nebraska, she developed herself as a Lyricist and known as a "Talent" hip hop artist. Her showcases began at local dive bars and her growth continued to show enough to graduate to bigger venues like Sokol Auditorium. In 2012 she moved to Minneapolis, picked up a guitar, and transformed herself into a singer/songwriter. Her writing style can be Folksy, Blues, alternative. There is no box to put her in. She has been playing around the cities for three years. Including Driftwood Char Bar, Honey, Fine Line, Stanley's Palace, and more.

Krista Wanous is an Art Therapist from Minneapolis MN. She is currently working at The Emily Program serving those struggling with eating disorders. She believes art is a powerful healing tool. She herself used art to heal as an adolescent and continues to provide this outlet to her clients as an avenue for self exploration and understanding. Her professional art career began with female portraiture in mixed media form and has since expanded into abstract work focused on depicting the deep and secretive emotions we often keep hidden from the world. She believes art is the greatest form of spiritual expression, tangible and soulfully felt by the viewer.

IN A UNIQUE DECEMBER GALLERY:: A COLLABORATIVE EXHIBIT BY BRANT KINGMAN & his mother, Polly Penney

Before dementia struck, Brant and his mom, Polly Penney, practically neighbors in Minneapolis, engaged in frequent outings and lively conversations about life's ups and downs. Polly loved art but she had never made any. She had been an active member of the MIA, The Walker and The Weisman where she appreciated the artistic endeavors of others.

Polly’s symptoms of dementia began four years ago—at this time, Brant found himself getting impatient and sometimes downright angry, with Polly. Where did his intelligent mom go? The woman who formerly was Development Director for Harvard's Center for Plant Conservation and a former Vice President of MCAD couldn't find her way back home after driving to the grocery store. And why would she set the table with five knives, two spoons and no plates?

What followed for Kingman was an excruciating journey of witnessing the rapid deterioration of his mom's mental faculties. As her primary caretaker, Brant became determined to find a new way to help his mom enjoy her life and express herself—even as words failed her.

Brant recognized his mother’s need for connection but found their traditional conversations impossible. He knew how drawing silenced his own mind and wondered if it would do the same for his mother. "We started copying artworks by the great masters, like Picasso and the German Expressionists. I discovered Mom could sit quietly and draw for an hour. It was a new way for us to commune in a meaningful way."

What happened next was so very sweet, "While there was no denying that Mom was losing her intellect and struggled to complete a simple sentence, another faculty seemed to open up during our art sessions. I don't know how else to say it, it was as though art gave voice to her Higher Self. She would become very quiet and focused and then she would often start to talk about her mother, Mimi, and her dad. We would talk about how her parents were present around her and waiting for her to join them on the other side."

These conversations led Brant and Polly to draw angels. They copied angels from books and built sculptures of them. Brant set up a studio in his mom's garage so that she could participate in building the 3 dimensional angels that soon came to line the driveway up to the house. “I had no way of telling Mom anything she could remember,” said the artist, “We made angel sculptures from sticks we collected on walks. She loved the whole process. I installed three 6’ tall angels on fence posts leading up to her door to remind her of where she was in her life process. They were intended as symbols of transition.”

On November 28, Polly is moving to a memory care facility in Colorado where her daughter, Kate, Brant's sister, plans to care for Polly. This exhibit by Brant Kingman and Polly Penney is dedicated to all families who face challenges of memory care and aging. It’s presented with the hope that it will encourage the families to seek creative responses to end-of-life situations.
Kingman created a Facebook page where he has collected posts about the process of learning to love his dementia-plagued mother. The page contains 17 written posts and dozens of photos of his mother’s art and of her in the process of making art. The Facebook page is called Art 4 Dementia. Inside Outside Upside Down (I.O.U. ARTS) is a Minneapolis based organization created on the premise that everyone deserves a chance to shine. The mission behind I.O.U. ARTS, is to raise awareness and funding for differently-abled artists and the art programs that support their individuality and talents. Through events, corporate sponsorships, strategic partnering and simply having the right people in place who hold the drive and passion to celebrate the many living ‘outside of the box’, I.O.U. ARTS has been successful in raising awareness, support, and funding for the vast number of differently-abled artists, existing in our Minneapolis Arts Community.


THE ARTISTS ::
Julia C. Spencer
At age 13, Julia C. Spencer had the opportunity to attend a Summer Expression Session class at the Minneapolis College of Art and Design. It was the experience of this class that propelled and fostered Julia’s dream of becoming a comic book artist. In 2003, Julia attended the Perpich Center for Arts Education where she intensively studied dance. Julia went on to enroll at the Minneapolis College of Art and Design as an Illustrator major, in 2005, but later her interests moved more to the area of Photography. In the spring of 2007, she became sick and stopped attending MCAD. Julia is currently working in the mediums of painting, photography, pastels, colored pencils, marker illustrations and jewelry.

Andrew Braunberger
Andrew Braunberger has been creating images, since discovering his thumbs. The artistic beginnings for Andrew involved working with soft pastels, in high school. He continued to love working with pastels as a medium, through his collegiate studies at the University of North Dakota. In 1992, Andrew graduated with a BA in Arts and Sciences through the Honors Program at UND—he has continued to work with pastels and consistently practice his craft, ever since. Many of Andrews works are in acrylic and oil, often with soft pastels used on top of these other media. Within his work you will notice vibrant colors and interaction within varying levels of opacity. Andrew also dabbles in digital art, but prefers the tactile experience of other media, more so than working digitally.

Allan Benson
In Allan’s words, “I create colorful patterns and shapes to make your eyes light up and to make the painting pop off the walls and ceilings and run away”.

Allan’s paintings and drawings of landscape, architecture, people, and still-life are expressions of what his vision of reality is. He creates images from what he sees and of his imagination.

Allan is inspired by plant life, the shapes of the land and architecture. He experiments and plays with perspective and dimension on the canvas and then fills it up with paint. Allan uses color and black outline to make the shapes pop out and appear more realistic. He likes to let his creativity run wild.

Allan recognized his abilities and desires to express himself through art in a class at Opportunity Partners, a Minnesota nonprofit organization that works alongside people with disabilities. Alan continues to strengthen his artistic visions and techniques in classes with his art mentor.

Allan has exhibited his work at the Hennepin County Library, Hopkins Center for the Arts, Opportunity Partners headquarters, Vision Loss Resources and Munka Beans Coffee Shop. His painting, Flower at Home, won 2nd place in painting at the Sister Kenney Annual International Art Show in May, 2009.

THE ARTIST : H. Leigh is an acrylic painter who captures intimate connections with horses and uses them as a form of transformation and healing in the creative process. H. Leigh grew up as an only child of a single working parent and spent most of her time with horses. They have been integral to H’s recovery through grief and loss throughout her life. 

She traveled around the country with renaissance festivals through her early adult life and then became an advocate for youth and homelessness. Her professional background of advocacy within area shelters over an 18 year span, along with her own recovery, sparked her motion into painting the healing journey by using her deep connection with horses. Horses have listened to her deepest core and have never judged; they are honest; they are patient. Horses are prey animals and naturally respond to changes in their environment. They make great therapists due to this fight or flight response because they detect unheard shifts in their atmosphere. 

H. Leigh is a published poet, published painter, and a published photographer. She holds a B.A. in Creative Healing in Human Development; a degree she created to fit the love of nature and arts based education and psychology. H. enjoys researching creative processes, neuroscience, nature and arts based developmental psychology, and wishes to inspire people while they are on their own healing journey. 

THE MUSICIAN : Singer-songwriter Joe Carey has been around the MN music scene for nearly two decades. He's a vocally-driven, guitar heavy player that has been known to produce bold performances. 

In addition to producing and appearing on countless recordings, Joe has also released two solo albums Wondervibe (2003) and Sunflower Soul (2009), and in 2014, headed up the release of his roots rock band The Chinwaggers' Wayward Son which the Current called, "stylistically diverse, but big and bold from start to finish."

THE ARTIST : Yuya Negishi is a Japanese visual artist based in Minneapolis, Minnesota. He was born in Showa Village, Gunma. A small farming community in the mountains beyond Tokyo. Yuya draws artistic inspiration from the memories and sensations of growing up in the Japanese countryside and approaches his work in the spirit of play, often exploring new ideas and mediums.

A combination of SUMI-e painting, calligraphy and other classical Japanese mediums and motifs; his work is an expression of cultural heritage, wonder and amusement. 

Along with being a working artist Yuya is an active member of the artistic community and also teaches Japanese artistic style to students in grade school up to college, and participates in public art projects and murals.

THE MUSICIAN : Benjamin "Czu" Galindo is a producer/Dj hailing out of Minneapolis. Focusing on house mixes, he's been devoted to helping people reach a level of higher consciousness through music since 2008!

THE ARTIST : G. Alex Cole is an artist and musician from Minneapolis who specializes in graffiti style spray painting. He creates hand cut stencils that are bold, and retain expressive nature that allow the emotion of the subject to be truly felt. By using popular, recognizable images and icons, his paintings stand out in true popular fashion, while still retaining a classic look.

THE MUSICIAN : David Wallace is a local Minneapolis professional guitarist and musician performing with several local artists, including fast-rising hip-hop artist RajiTheOne. Fluent in a variety of styles and genres, David prefers playing jazz and blues as he considers those his strongest styles. Rock, R&B, soul, pop, indie and even metal influences can also be heard in his infectious grooves.

THE ARTIST : Kyle is an emerging freelance artist that explores his creative path using pencil, ink and acrylic paint. THE ARTIST : Genevieve began painting & drawing at a young age, and found watercolor as a portrait assignment in college. Watercolor was a medium that inspired but intimidated, portraits were a field she admired yet avoided, she hesitatingly stumbled into watercolor portraits & found it opened up new avenues for her art.
Absorbed in the world of painting techniques Genevieve discovered she doesn't use the medium traditionally. She paints tightly and with precision, especially in the portrayal of a person. Once the subject is accurately interpreted through her eyes, the creativity drifts in when she 'dresses up' the paintings in flowing whimsical and colorful embellishments, sprouting unexpectedly yet demanding equal attention as the subject. 
Genevieve believes each individual has a unique perspective & constructs hers through her art. Her paintings are inspired by beauty in humanity & the artistry of color. She hopes to portray balance between strength & delicacy, femininity & drama. Her prowess as an artist is often shown in striking images of women whom evoke strong yet fragile feelings in the observer. These paintings are more emotion based than conceptual, bringing beauty and aura to the space & mind it occupies.

THE MUSICIAN : Music has always played a big part in Donnie Stellmaker's life, giving context to and providing a cultural marker for just about every event in his life. Donnie has been dj'ing in some way or another for over 20 years. Doesn't beiieve in genres except good and not good. Does believe in the power of music to make everything better.

THE ARTIST : Matthew Gaulke has been experiementing with art since gradeschool, from comic book characters to oil painting, and most recently marker drawing. Through the turbulence of life, including finding and later losing faith in religion, Matthew has found that making art is the only thing that gives his life meaning... Next to family and pizza. His current inspiration comes from super models because he finds them to be both unique looking and beautiful, which is what he hopes to achieve with his own art -- something unique but still beautiful. His collection of marker-drawn portriats will include a range of stripped down line drawings and drawing brilliantly placed shapes, color and shading, leading the viewer to engage with the depth and intricacy of the figure. Matthew tries not to over think his art, but rather just have fun with his creations and share that with others.

THE MUSICIAN : Jeff Swiff is a Minneapolis dance music enthusiast, promoter and DJ, with a residency at Minneapolis' Alibi Lounge. Jeff has over a decade of strong roots in all that is House Music, and a flair for that deep ish. THE ARTIST : James Foreman titles this body of work "MYSTICAL INQUIRIES" because he views artwork, the process of creating artwork, and the interaction of a viewer with artwork, as a mystical process of transformation. He believes that such transformation opens the heart even deeper into the wonders of life. The symbols in his work have no particular intentional meaning but are playful inquiries into the joys within the viewer. Within the work, that the symbols, and the background abstraction, are painted in a manner that evokes a deeper presence within the self. The paintings in this collection are titled as questions which intend to further evoke an attitude of exploration. James' philosophy on living his life is the same as how he paints: exploring the presence and direction of these mysteries through both painting and other art forms.

THE MUSICIAN : Sarah Morris has been described as a "rootsy singer with a Norah Jones-like approach to Americana/alt-country, smoothing over its rough edges with a butter-velvety voice and an intimate songwriting style" (Chris Riemenschneider, Star Tribune). Sarah has released two albums of original material, receiving critical praise and propelling her into the national spotlight as a top 4 finalist in The NewSong Music Contest in January 2016 where she had the honor to perform at New York’s famed Lincoln Center.

THE ARTIST: Jodi Bee has a BFA in studio art: drawing and painting, as well as a BS in Art Education (K-12) and loves to be both an apprentice and a mentor. She creates colorful and inspirational art ranging from mixed media to mandalas to paintings and illustrations. Whether she's pulling together images, painting or drawing, she finds inspiration all around her. She collects and processes used books, cutting them apart and filing the images she likes. In her February exhibition you will get to experience how she shuffles images together that seem to relate or connect somehow - perhaps in feeling, color or narrative. This body of highly detailed collage work emphasizes geometry. An almost musical movement is created by repeating shapes in a rhythmical sequence. Circles are a common link among this body of work, representing wholeness, completeness and purity. Circles are the most important and universal geometric symbol because it is implicit in other important symbols such as the sacred halo, the face of a clock, the ring, the life cycle, as well as the stars and planets of our cosmos. The subject matter explores the sublime feelings of awe and wonder, and depict the transcendant moment of altered consciousness that unifies and unveils our human experience with others.

THE MUSICIAN : Sasha Mercedes is a singer/songwriter from Minneapolois, MN. She has traveled from coast to coast and abroad, performing and drawing inspiration out of every experience. Over the years, she has released 6 solo albums, and is currently in the pre-production stages of her next release!

The Artist: Krista Wanous is based in Minneapolis, MN. She is a fulltime student at Alfred Adler Institute studying Art Therapy. She believes "Art Heals" and has used that phrase as her life motto. Her paintings will be on display in the Jungle Red Gallery during the month of January. What a perfect pairing as we head into the darker colder months in our home state. Winter in Minnesota is devoid of color and the eye is forced to notice the raw beauty in shadow and light. Likewise, these female perspectives show the range and variance of feminine emotion and their moments of light and darkness. Each piece is handcrafted with a variety of materials; acrylic paints, ink and stains, aerosol paints, metallic flecks and glitter.

The Musician: Peter Lochner is a songer/songwriter from Minneapolis, MN. He has played in the band Stook! & The Jukes since 2006 and is currently recording his second album.

JobyLynn has discovered that photography is calming for her, and it is not uncommon for JobyLynn to come home from an event having taken close to 1,000 photos in one evening. As someone who openly admits to suffering from mental illness she has been happy to learn that it’s the art that sustains her and sees her through her darkest of hours. She may paint murals one day, while arranging flowers the next.  She is stimulated and inspired most by anything visual. JobyLynn’s art is focused on emotional well-being, and is never limited to one medium. You may recognize JobyLynn’s mixed media artwork locally, as she was a window designer in the “Artist in Storefronts” project on Eat Street in Minneapolis. Join us in welcoming JobyLynn to the Gallery for an exhibit of photography during the month of December.

Nick Hensley is the former lead singer and co writer of The District, a regional act from the upper Midwest, co based out of St. Paul, MN and Chicago, IL. He created Love Songs For Angry Men shortly after The District called it quits in 2002. Hensley’s alias and alter ego, Love Songs For Angry Men, was born to get people talking and through the doors. Now, eight years later, it’s is the title of his first solo effort and also used as a general band name. Nick is an avid supporter of original MN music. In turn, he has created some of Minnesota’s most popular Songwriter Showcases including MNaked and the MN Songwriter Showcase which is held every Sunday in St. Paul.

Haircuts from a master stylist for an amazing cause

WHAT:   Patrick Lomantini, creator of BarkAid and master stylist, is in his third year of traveling around the country giving haircuts to raise money for 50 animal shelters in need. With past years of raising $47,000 for organizations that help homeless animals across the United States, Lomantini has the goal of reaching upwards of $90,000 during the 2015 tour. The 50 States Tour to benefit homeless animals will be making a stop in Minneapolis for a day of hair cutting and fund raising at Jungle Red Salon Spa Gallery, located at 1362 LaSalle Ave in Minneapolis,  for Midwest Animal Rescue & Services (MARS). Funds raised will help MARS care for the more than 1500 adoptable pets waiting for forever homes.

Kristi is fascinated with the use of color, pattern and texture. She combines these three elements in an innovative and exciting way through her artwork.

HER LATEST SERIES: POP ICONS will be the body of work featured through August. Her first piece in the series, Audrey, was inspired by New York street artist Tristen Eaton and lead her to create more "pop art" style portraits of influential people in the public and in her life personally. Materials such as lace, foils and chalk are brought together to create a unique feel of texture.

Duane will be making his debut in The Jungle Red Gallery featuring rich color and texture on canvas with landscape and natural world subjects.

Upon entering retirement, Duane has committed himself to his artistic creation full time. Layering Spackle mixed with pigments helps creates his structural and textural paintings. Color also plays a large role in his work. Birch trees are of particular influence to him as is the emotions behind photographs of nature.

Jungle Red is honored to have worked with AVENUES for more than a decade. Avenues provides short-term housing and support services to homeless youth in our community to help them stabilize, address their crisis needs, and start addressing long-term goals. Through such service, Avenues seeks to help youth make a successful transition into young adulthood.

AVENUES needs your support to close the $50,000 gap in operating budget to open their newest facility in Brooklyn Park, Brooklyn Avenues. This facility was strategically built to aid youth who have been victimized by local sex trafficking. Join us on February 6th and show your support for these kids!

We are excited to welcome our featured artist for the month of December, Susan Opitz! Her colorful work is created in her Northeast Minneapolis studio where she also creates custom jewelery.

"My work can be described as a combination of lyrical and abstract expressionism. I am a self taught artist using primarily a painting knife to create layers and texture that result in a full range of color with diverse experimentation."

In addition to all the fun and excitement of our ongoing monthly event that includes complimentary wine, hors d'oeuvres and live music this year we have partnered with Avenues for Homeless Youth to set up a Wish Tree that includes clothing and other necessities for underprivileged youth in our community.

We will be collecting donations toward the items needed and our team will take point in purchasing, wrapping and delivering these items to our friends at Avenues. Donating to this wonderful cause will help make the holidays a little brighter for someone who truly needs our support.

The Jungle Red Gallery is thrilled to announce our October Rhythm & Red with fantastic artwork by Rikki Sneddon & live music from the lively band Dirty Louis!

Rikki Sneddon is a 2013 Rawards Minneapolis Artist of the Year Nominee/semi­finalist. Her current work focuses on figure and portrait mixed media paintings. She applies a technique of blending watercolor and acrylic paints with layers of collage and photo transferring to create her unique style. When asked to describe her style of painting she replies ‘I rely on our human desire for mystery and seduction. Our love of beauty in its most familiar form, ourselves.‘ She aspires that her paintings carry a sense of intrigue and mystery; some collectors have described her works as ‘dreamlike’.

Mike Borell is the front man for the local alternative country-rock band Dirty Louis. Their sound ranges from classic american blues to emotional ballads with Mike as the lead vocals and guitar. They will be belting out acoustic versions of the band's biggest hits off their upcoming album, fresh out of the production studio. After playing classic venues like The Fine Line and The Narrows, Mike and Eddie along with the rest of the 5-piece band has gained momentum in the local spotlight and Jungle Red is so excited to to have them perform live at Rhythm & Red!

Lois brings with her, an extensive background in photography and art with more than 14 years of experience. She uses a combination of digital and wet media to transform her photographs into fine art paintings. From early childhood, Kristi has spent her life travelling between Sydney, Australia and Saint Paul, Minnesota. She was seldom without a book, a Barbie doll and a set of coloring pencils. After graduate degrees in Design and an Executive MBA, she rose to be the CEO of an online simulation company. Then, in 2012, she decided to ditch the corporate life for one where she could focus on her true passion – to become a living artist!

Kristi is fascinated with the use of color, pattern and texture. She tries to combine these three elements in all of her works.

Her latest series concentrates on the technique of collage and combining imagery and papers in a complex way to create beautiful, multi-layered artworks. Materials such as foils, lace and chalk are layered together to create a feel of unique texture that will be a fresh, new addition for our gallery.

Local country/pop musicians Benjamin Kelly and Rachel Sara Roberts will be playing LIVE here in the gallery as our featured music artists.

Jungle Red Salon Spa Gallery is thrilled host artists Celia Graham and Allison Oreck for a dual showcase of our May edition of Rhythm & Red. Both Celia and Allison have a youthful and light-hearted style of art with inspiration stemming from bold, rich colors.

Allison is a local artist who expresses herself using deep, rich colors. She hopes her art will enhance any room and bring happiness to those who view her work.

“The art I am planning to show at Jungle Red is drawn from multiple inspirations. I love to pull inspiration from textile prints, the latest trends in home decor and experiment with unique techniques. Color, print, pattern and texture are all things I strive to incorporate in every piece. My work appeals to many different aesthetics. I believe the art people surround themselves with should be a reflection of the life they want to lead and bring happiness to a room!” Allison Oreck

Celia, another Minnesota native, loves to work primarily with acrylics. Her art explores portraits and landscapes and, most recently, she has found inspiration from youth and the magic of innocence.

Jungle Red is proud to partner with Rock The Cause to present a night to shake off the winter funk, on Saturday March 29th at 7:30 p.m. at our signature event, Glitter Ball 5! Funk is the theme of the evening and the atrium of the historic Grain Belt Bottling House in Northeast Minneapolis, will be transformed into a blazing inferno of music, fashion, and charitable giving. Our chosen beneficiary and partner for the event is Ampersand Families and The Avenues for Homeless Youth. Jungle Red Salon will be coordinating a donation directly through its Treasures for Teens initiative. These two organizations hold a key role in providing both temporary and permanent placement for homeless youth in the Twin Cities. Critically acclaimed headliner, Black Joe Lewis, a funk and soul artist out of Austin, Texas is often compared to the Godfather of Soul, James Brown. Black Joe Lewis will be back with his 10-piece band for a rare Twin Cities appearance after a sold out First Avenue concert in October last year. Local band Viva Knievel, will deliver a smoking warm up along with special guests Nicholas David, Chris Koza of Rogue Valley, Alicia Wiley of All Eye’s, Carnage of Rhymesayers, Alex Steele of Night Phoenix and Dan Rodriguez. Get Ready For The Holidays!

As you well know, the Holiday season is a busy time of the year for everyone.  Shopping, decorating, preparing for family and friends and attempting to keep up with your beauty regimen under the stress of the season can take its toll.  In addition, because we reside in Minnesota and our roads can often be unreliable and ridiculously icy, our drive time is increased which leaves us with even tighter schedules.

Because it’s the season of giving, we wanted to give you some quick tips to help you use your resources, time, and energy more efficiently and truly make the season a little easier on you this year.

Décor

If you’re anything like us, then one of your favorite parts of this season is covering your home with holiday decorations.  It can be fun to update your Christmas tree ornaments and lights every few years, but what do you do with those unused decorations when you’re done?

Real Simple magazine suggested placing those vintage or unused sparkly ornaments you have lying around on a cake stand for an easy, cute center piece or display.  Mixing faux leaves in with the ornaments will add an extra fun touch and make for a fabulous and trendy center display on any table.

In addition, spare lights can oftentimes be quite tricky to untangle.  If you’re looking for a fun way to use these extra strings without having to go through the headache of untangling every strand, simply find an old, large jar at any thrift or vintage store and pop the lights into the jar for a unique and luminous light display in any room.

Clothing

Because we’re often running from one event to another, making sure our clothes can easily transition from day to night is important!   From work to holiday parties, and family gatherings to reunions with friends, let’s be honest, we’re left with little time to freshen up, let alone change clothes.  It’s important to keep items with us that will make the evolution easy and flawless.

 

We live in Minnesota, so one of the most important tips we can give (for both your sanity and safety) is to wear a pair of boots to and from each different event in your day.  If you’re running errands in between events, this quick shoe change can shave off time (and pain) from your day and leave you with more time to freshen up your make up and change your clothing.

In addition, having fun accessories in your purse or bag can make all the difference.  Going from work to a gathering with friends doesn’t have to be a huge ordeal in regards to your wardrobe!  Simply adding a chunky necklace or some statement earrings to that blazer and shirt combo can spice up a look and make it fun and appropriate for both day and night.

This holiday season, our stylist, Leah, has been using lots of dark colors on her clients’ nails.  Deep reds, navies, and plums are among the few she suggested as an addition to any holiday look this year!

Victoria’s Secret Fashion Show by the Numbers

Ever wonder what it takes to prepare for a Victoria’s Secret Fashion Show? At Jungle Red we took a closer look into the numbers of this year’s 28th annual and 12th televised Fashion Show produced by Stephanie Seymour, a previous VS model and founder of the first show in 1995.

While it may seem like a (cat)walk in the park, it’s actually quite the contrary. Planning for this world renowned event begins the February before each show. It takes months of preparation to book a venue and big name artists to perform who will draw a crowd as the models strut in glitzy blinged-out lingerie. The show was pre-recorded on Nov. 13 at the Lexington Avenue Armory in New York City, and Taylor Swift, Fall Out Boy and A Great Big World were seen performing. This year’s production and musical talent budget is $12 million, compared to $120,000 at VS’s first Fashion Show.

There is no general sale of tickets for the show. Tickets to the VS Fashion Show can be found at prime ticket brokers and charitable auctions. Expect to pay a minimum of $14,000 for one ticket.

The Royal Fantasy Bra, worn by Candice Swanepoel, is the first since 2005 that makes it to the $10 million mark, and it is one of four Fantasy Bras worth $10 million. This piece alone has more than 4,200 precious gems including rubies, diamonds and yellow sapphires. No one has ever purchased a Fantasy Bra, and after the show they are dismantled. The most expensive Fantasy Bra amounts to $15 million from 2000.

Rhythm & Red: David Bekkerus and DJ Wicked

Meet the Artist: David Bekkerus

David Bekkerus graduated in May 2012 with a B.A. in English and a Writing Influence from the University of Saint Thomas. Living in Minneapolis for the past eight years, Bekkerus has been a studio artist at The Soap Factory since 2013.

He has published several short stories, such as “Summit Avenue Review” and “Paper Darts,” but has set his pen down to explore oil and encaustic painting, as well as mixed media. Bekkerus has displayed his work at the Loring Park Dunn Brothers from Aug. to Oct. 2013 and in the biennial KNOWNUNKNOWNS exhibition at the Soap Factory in Dec. 2012.

His current pieces explore abstract color combinations using primarily an impasto style of painting, embracing the texture of a thick bristled brushstroke.

Bekkerus’ paintings will be displayed in Jungle Red Salon Spa and Gallery Wednesday, Dec. 4 and throughout the month.

Meet the DJ: DJ Wicked

David Bowie, Roxy Music, soul, and funk are just a few of DJ Wicked’s biggest influences as a young performer.  Shah Hilali, or better known by his stage name as DJ Wicked, grew up in London, UK. Living with his musically inclined family, Hilali started collecting records at the age of 13. His favorite genres of music include Soul, Brazilian, Jazz-Funk and Latin.

By trade, Hilali is an Aerospace Engineer, currently working in the medical field.  When not spinning, he is traveling all over the U.S., Asia and Europe meeting friendly faces, new customers and potential clients.

Along with performing at the December Rhythm & Red, DJ Wicked has also performed at Tangiers, Chambers Hotel, Fuji-Ya, Parma 8200, The King & I Thai and the Minneapolis Institute of Arts. We are ecstatic to welcome DJ Wicked to Jungle Red Salon, Spa and Gallery’s monthly Rhythm & Red event Wednesday, Dec. 4.

The Future of Male Beauty Trends

Hey Guys!  Have you ever grabbed your gal’s concealer to mask pesky blemishes or those dark circles that sometimes crop up under your eyes?   • Cosmetic Lines - Marc Jacobs and Tom Ford each launched new male cosmetic lines this year; both of which included concealer, bronzer, and other personal care products specifically designed for men.  Ford stated, “I know so many guys — gay, straight, whatever — who steal a woman’s concealer and dab a little on their fingers when no one is looking; it just makes skin look better.”

  • Manicures and Pedicures - Neat, clean fingernails can make a man look more sophisticated while a great pedicure in the summer can make a man’s feet look more clean and healthy when he’s lounging in the summer sand. Fall 2013 Men's Hair Trend Report

Fall is the perfect time to reinvent yourself with a stylish new look! Here are a few of our favorite haircuts and styles that will be sure to satisfy your itch for something new.

One of our favorite new (yet classic) hairstyles for men is the Giant Wave, straight off the runways from Milan. This hairstyle is all about tousled volume, yet maintains a sophisticated look. To obtain this look, you need medium-length hair on the top and sides, with the top being a bit longer. Comb through a firm hold styling product when wet, we love Night.Rider or Super.Goo by Kevin.Murphy. Then, part your hair on one side and comb it back and towards the other side in a long, soft wave. Finish with a hairspray such as Intelligent Nutrients’ Perfect Hold Hair Spray to hold your wave in place. This look is great perfectly molded for all-day work-to-play wear, or with natural bounce and movement as you move through your day.

If you prefer something more tight and clean, go for the Jagged Peak Cut. This is a transformed, more modern version of a look that became popular in the 90’s. To accomplish this look, keep the hair at the top of your head medium-length and cut or clipper the sides short. Rhythm & Red: Leslie Barlow & DJ Keezy!

We are thrilled to be featuring these two talented ladies for November's Rhythm & Red! Artist, Leslie Barlow, will be showcasing her collection of oil paintings and more throughout the month of November at Jungle Red Salon Spa Gallery. Join us on the opening night of Wednesday, November 6th from 7-9pm to enjoy her work along with LIVE music from our featured musician Akeena "DJ Keezy" Bronson. Enjoy complimentary wine, great music, and good company!

 

Leslie Barlow graduated from University of Wisconsin- Stout with a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Studio Art, Magna Cum Laude and with Honors.  Originally from South Minneapolis, she moved back to Minnesota in 2011 and has continued creating and exhibiting works in the area.  During the school year she works at Anoka-Ramsey Community College in the Art Department.  In her free time she enjoys staying active- whether running, rock climbing, or skiing, and she has a soft spot for sci-fi & adventure movies.

Leslie Barlow tells the story of her work:

“At the most basic level, I believe artists are storytellers.  There are a lot stories I wish to tell, many of which are reflections of my experiences and the experiences of people around me.  My artwork recently has divulged into two paths: a contemporary study of the human condition through the figure, and the personal story of my path as a multiracial female artist growing up in Minnesota. Both paths seek to create socially aware pieces that engage people in conversation, challenge the status quo, and present thought-provoking contemporary figurative work.

My artwork is content driven, introspective, and fiercely loyal to painterly detail.  The figure is very important and central to my work, but there is the ever-evolving tension between figure and background as the abstraction of mark and bold color weave in and out of the subject matter.  My love of mark-making has even pushed me to start creating smaller pieces to highlight the texture of the paint and abstract detail of my work- practicing within this scope helps influence my larger paintings.  My primary medium is oil paint, however with my body of work continually evolving; I’m very interested in expanding the media to accommodate my ideas and process.”

Akeena Bronson, also known as DJ Keezy, is proud to call Minneapolis, MN her hometown.  She is currently attending St. Cloud State University in pursuit of her degree in Mass Communications and Broadcasting with anticipation to have her own radio station.

While growing up DJ Keezy was influenced greatly by r&b, hip hop, and jazz with a deep appreciation for female artists such as M.I.A, Sade, Lauryn Hill and Salt-N-Pepa to name a few. When Keezy soon realized that people appreciated her taste in music she spent time shadowing DJ’s to continue to develop her craft. Beginning in 2013 she continued to develop her name in the St. Cloud area at clubs Biology701, The Press, and The Red Carpet.

DJ Keezy is known for spinning old school throwbacks, tracks by female artist, and the hottest new remixes.  Most recently she has performed in Chicago at DePaul University, special events, the U of M, and alongside the world-class beat box artist DJ Snuggles at many venues including First Ave 7th street Entry.  However, her deep love for music is not the only thing that motivates her. Knowing that she is a part of an industry that is dominated by men has only given her more determination and drive to uplift and inspire females just like her, especially those in music industry.

Keezy believes that music is the answer to everything.  Her passion as a DJ is to bring people together, make them forget about all their worries, and play the kind of music that people can groove to no matter who they are.

Rhythm & Red: Rachel Eisenmann and DJ Weizy!

We are excited to welcome Jungle Red’s featured artist for the month of October! Rachel Eisenmann will be displaying her work all throughout the month at Jungle Red Salon Spa Gallery. MEET THE ARTIST: RACHEL EISENMANN

Rachel is inspired by her day-to-day life, daydreams and moments that make her emotions peak. Her personal take to art; everyone can do it. She believes all that is required is that it means something to you. Rachel also thinks that when it comes to art, people will respect and love your artwork once they can see the passion in each stroke or line come through.

Rachel grew up in Superior Wisconsin. She attended the University of Wisconsin, Stout for the beginning of her art education degree. She has taken a break from school, but plans to return and finish her art degree to help children who are unable to express their emotions verbally. Rachel places a large importance on art invoking feeling. After leaving Stout, she spent more time with her family and then decided to follow her heart to the cities to continue to pursue her passions in art. In her free time, Rachel loves long walks in the snow and enjoys a bowl of peppermint ice cream.

When looking at her artwork, Rachel hopes that it brings up emotions and memories that remind you of experiencing true gratitude.

MEET THE MUSICIAN: DJ WEIZY

Joining us for our Rhythm & Red Gallery reception will be DJ Weizy. He first became interested in Electronic Dance Music in 1996. From there he purchased his first set of turntables, and quickly found a niche playing progressive house at raves and events such as Bash in the Grass near his hometown of Sioux Falls, South Dakota.

In 2000, Weizy moved to the Twin Cities to attend college. Once there, he became friends with some of the DJs involved in Mile High Productions namely Jack Trash, Kid Icarus and Jevne. In later years, Weizy performed at numerous venues that Twin Cities including former Quest Nightclub and The Refuge, Tabu, Temple, The Imperial Room and The Lounge.

Weizy Over has had the pleasure to play alongside such names as Paul Oakenfold, Donald Glaude, Pete Tong, DJ Dan, Tiesto, Max Graham, Luke Fair and many more well known and respected DJs. He has been a member of MCast since 2007, completing 19 shows and featured on Proton Radio.

Currently, Weizy is a monthly resident at Gingerhop in Northeast Minneapolis.

New Season, New Look!

The next time you don your favorite cable knit, be sure you have the perfect fall locks to match. The beginning of each season is the perfect time to refresh your look! Whether it’s simply sprucing up your ends with a trim to keep your mane feeling healthy, or a more drastic cut & color to pair with your cozier wardrobe, the option of choice is on your side this season. A classic look strutting its way to popularity for this fall is a chic black hair color. Hair stylist, Molly, of the Jungle Red team recommends avoiding stark contrast between your skin and dark hair by adding a panel of deep brown to frame your face. If a lighter hair color is more your speed, you can make your hair lively and three dimensional by adding multi-tonal, “piecier” foils. Highlights and lowlights done in this fashion make the look more natural. Another way we suggest making your ‘do fall ready is by getting regular deep conditioning and scalp treatments to keep the moisture in and the dry fall air out!
